An adult best friendship is a close, voluntary relationship built on trust, reciprocity, dependable contact and shared care—not a fixed number of years, calls or friends. There is no universal definition of “best friend,” and there is no established number of close friends adults need. It does suggest that friendship quality and time spent socializing with friends are associated with well-being, while broad social connection matters for health. Those findings support making room for meaningful relationships, not expecting one person to guarantee happiness or prevent illness.

What makes someone an adult best friend?

“Best friend” is a personal label, not a consistently defined research category. People and studies draw different lines between a friend, a close friend and a best friend, so there is no single test that determines whether a relationship qualifies.

In everyday life, the label often describes a friendship with unusual trust, emotional closeness and mutual reliability. The friendship is voluntary: both people choose to maintain it, and care flows in both directions over time. That does not mean every exchange must be perfectly equal, or that either person must be available at all times.

Closeness also need not look identical across friendships. Some best friends talk often; others remain close despite distance or long gaps between conversations. What matters is whether the pattern works for both people and whether they can count on each other when it matters.

Why closeness can matter more than a friend count

Having enough friends and feeling close to them are different things. In two national samples of U.S. adults surveyed in 2022 and 2023, the American Friendship Project reported that more than 75% of respondents were satisfied with the number of friends they had, while over 40% wanted greater closeness with their friends. These are findings from the project’s samples, not universal estimates or a timeless picture of adult friendship.

The distinction is useful: someone can have a busy social calendar yet miss being understood, while someone with a small circle can feel well supported. A raw count does not show how much intimacy, reciprocity or dependable contact a person wants.

There is no evidence-based minimum number of close friends or best friends that everyone needs. The more practical question is whether your relationships offer the kind of connection you value and whether you have enough time and opportunity to sustain them.

What research says about friendship and well-being

A 2023 systematic review examined 38 research articles published between 2000 and 2019. Across the studies, friendship quality and socializing with friends generally predicted or were positively correlated with well-being. Friend count, efforts to maintain friendships and support were also positively associated with some aspects of well-being. The review noted limitations and gaps, with evidence sparse, mixed or specific to particular populations for some outcomes.

These findings describe associations; they do not prove that a particular friendship causes a particular outcome for every person. The U.S. Surgeon General’s 2023 advisory addresses social connection broadly, including loneliness and isolation, and states that “social connection is a significant predictor of individual health and well-being.” That is a broad statement about social connection, not a finding that having one best friend alone produces a health benefit.

How adults can build a closer friendship

Adult friendships often have to compete with work, caregiving, moves and changing routines. There is no universal contact schedule, but a few practical habits can create more chances for closeness without turning friendship into a performance.

Start with a real point of connection

Spend time with people you already enjoy or share interests, routines or values with. A class, volunteer commitment, neighborhood activity or recurring group can make it easier to see the same people more than once. Repeated contact creates opportunity, but closeness still depends on mutual interest and trust.

Make a specific invitation

Instead of relying on “we should get together,” suggest an activity and a time: a walk next week, lunch after work or a call on Sunday. Specific plans make it easier for the other person to say yes, suggest another time or decline clearly.

Build trust gradually

Share something meaningful, listen with attention and follow through on what you say you will do. Trust grows through repeated experiences of being heard and treated with care; it does not require either person to disclose everything immediately.

Show up for ordinary and difficult moments

Friendship includes more than crisis support. Ask about something your friend mentioned earlier, celebrate good news and offer practical or emotional help when it is welcome. Sharing positive experiences and providing support are reasonable ways to invest in a relationship, though no guaranteed formula has been established.

How to keep an adult best friendship strong

Maintenance should fit the people involved, not an arbitrary rule about how many times to call or meet. Work schedules, distance, health, family responsibilities and communication preferences can all shape what dependable contact looks like.

  • Talk about what works. If one person prefers calls and the other likes messages, agree on a pattern that feels comfortable rather than assuming.
  • Protect time together. A recurring walk, shared meal or occasional longer conversation can make connection easier to sustain amid busy schedules.
  • Be reciprocal over time. Both people should have room to initiate, listen, ask for support and offer it. Reciprocity need not be identical in every week or season.
  • Address strain directly. If something feels one-sided or hurtful, describe the behavior and its effect, then make space for the other person’s perspective.
  • Allow the friendship to change. A new job, move or caregiving responsibility may change contact without ending closeness. Check in about the relationship rather than treating a quieter stretch as proof that it no longer matters.

When a friendship feels one-sided or distant

A close friendship can go through uneven periods, but a lasting pattern of one person doing all the initiating or emotional work may be worth discussing. Try a direct, low-pressure conversation: explain what you miss, ask how the other person sees things and suggest a realistic way to reconnect.

If the other person cannot or does not want to invest in the same kind of relationship, that is painful but useful information. You can value the history while adjusting your expectations and making room for other connections. Friendship is voluntary; closeness cannot be demanded from someone who does not reciprocate.
