Adolescence is a four-episode Netflix limited series that turns a family’s worst crisis into an intimate, emotionally punishing drama. Stephen Graham anchors the story as the father of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, played by Owen Cooper, who is accused of murdering a classmate. Its continuous-shot episodes create an unusual sense of presence, though the technique can sometimes compete with the people and story at the center.
What is Adolescence about?
The series begins with police arresting Jamie at home and follows the shock waves through his family and community. Rather than staying with one investigation, it shifts among the arrest and its aftermath, the school’s response, Jamie’s sessions with a psychologist, and his family’s attempt to live with what has happened. The Guardian describes the story as spanning 13 months; the changing settings and time jumps give the four episodes distinct points of view.

This is a crime drama, but its deeper subject is the difficulty of understanding a young person—and the consequences of adults assuming they already do. It examines online youth culture, misogyny and incel ideology, masculinity, family responsibility, and adult blind spots. Those are questions the series raises, not evidence that any single influence explains youth violence. It offers no simple diagnosis or easy escape from the family’s predicament.
Does the one-shot technique serve the story?
Each episode is filmed as one continuous shot. The effect is not just a visual flourish: with no edits to offer a pause or change of perspective, scenes unfold in real time and the viewer stays close to the characters’ movements and reactions. Los Angeles Times critic Robert Lloyd writes that “when an image never cuts, the viewer, like the characters, is trapped in their world.” That feeling of confinement suits a story in which the family cannot step outside the crisis.

The technique also makes the production itself hard to ignore. The Associated Press reported that the episodes required extensive rehearsal, choreography, planned locations, and coordinated camera movement. Stephen Graham, an actor and co-creator, said the approach brings “that kind of spontaneity and that energy that you get from doing a play and doing a live performance,” while co-creator and writer Jack Thorne praised the technical achievement: “The technical mastery on this show is so amazing,”
That mastery has a trade-off. Lloyd finds the long takes effective at creating immersion, but says they can divide attention between the drama and how the scene is being made; at times, the result can feel theatrical. TheWrap critic Amber Dowling likewise praises the production achievement while finding that the second episode’s ambition occasionally pulls focus from the central story. The device deepens the experience most when it disappears into the characters’ tension; when it becomes the main event, the drama loses some of its immediacy.

Graham gives the family’s crisis a grounded emotional center, and Cooper’s Jamie is the series’ most unsettling presence: a child whose inner life remains difficult to read. The shifting perspectives allow other characters to register the event differently, rather than treating the family as the only people affected. Lucy Mangan of The Guardian calls the series “a deeply moving, deeply harrowing experience,” praising its naturalistic writing and performances.
The extended scenes give actors room to let uncertainty and emotion accumulate rather than resolve neatly at each cut. That can be absorbing, though the same length and staging can push a moment toward theatricality. The show’s most affecting work comes from allowing discomfort to remain, not from supplying a tidy explanation for Jamie or a reassuring conclusion for his family.
Is Adolescence worth watching?
Yes, if you are prepared for a harrowing drama that values emotional and moral unease over easy answers. Its subject matter is difficult, and the continuous-shot format may feel conspicuous to viewers who prefer editing that recedes into the background. But the form gives the family’s experience a sustained pressure that conventional coverage might soften, while the performances keep the story human rather than merely technical.
The series has also received substantial industry recognition: Netflix Tudum reports eight Emmy wins in 2025 and four Golden Globe wins in 2026. Those awards establish its place in the current television conversation, but the stronger reason to watch is the tension between what the characters can know, what they fear, and what they must carry on living with.
