Adam Brody said he initially hesitated when he learned that his role in Nobody Wants This carried a strong religious dimension. But playing Noah, a rabbi, also prompted him to learn more about Jewish history and culture. His account points to a central tension in the Netflix romantic comedy: the story asks how a relationship works across differences in faith and outlook, while its lead actor has been careful to distinguish his own perspective from his character’s convictions.
What is Nobody Wants This about?
Netflix describes the series as a romantic comedy about Noah, a rabbi played by Brody, and Joanne, an agnostic Los Angeles podcaster played by Kristen Bell. Their relationship develops amid differences in outlook and complications from the people around them. The premise makes Noah’s faith part of the couple’s shared life, rather than a detail detached from the romance.
In a Netflix Tudum profile, Brody contrasted the show’s approach with romantic-comedy plots that depend on keeping a major misunderstanding alive. “A lot of the genre is ‘built on the premise of a big misunderstanding and then you run that as long as you can get away with it,’” he said. The profile instead emphasizes the couple’s day-to-day relationship. Read the Netflix Tudum profile.
What did Adam Brody say about playing a rabbi?
In remarks reproduced by Yahoo Entertainment from an interview with IndieWire, Brody said, “I initially winced at the religiosity of it.” The line describes his first reaction to the part, not a statement about Noah’s beliefs or a full account of Brody’s own relationship with religion.

He also described the role as a chance to take on a community leader whose faith and cultural background called for more understanding. “It was important because I could speak with some authority on it, both in the character and even outside of the character, as someone who’s going to play a community leader of a specific creed and race. It did unlock a much deeper knowledge and appreciation for the history of a people and a culture.” These comments are reported by Yahoo Entertainment, which relays the IndieWire interview; the reproduced wording should not be treated as a direct transcript of the full original interview.
How did the series approach casting Noah?
Creator Erin Foster said she wanted Noah to feel different from the cynical men she saw in other stories. “There was this kind of cynicism in all these guys that this character couldn’t have. He needed to have a genuine warmth about him, and he needed to have a softness [and] sweetness.” That description frames Noah’s warmth as a deliberate element of the character, alongside his role as a rabbi.

Is Nobody Wants This based on a true story?
It is scripted fiction inspired in part by Foster’s life and relationship experience, not a literal retelling of every event. That distinction matters: the series draws on personal experience without establishing that Noah and Joanne’s story, as shown, happened exactly as written.
