Ricky Whittle’s work on The 100 and Mistresses overlapped on television after the production periods largely followed one another; Diedrich Bader described a more direct case, filming three series during the same stretch in 2018.
Two different kinds of overlap
“On two shows at the same time” can refer to overlapping broadcasts or overlapping production schedules. The distinction matters: episodes may air in the same week even when the actor filmed them months apart. Conversely, a performer may work on multiple productions in the same period, sometimes with split days or overnight shoots.
- Broadcast overlap: episodes featuring the actor appear on television during the same period, regardless of when they were filmed.
- Filming overlap: production schedules for the shows coincide, so the actor works on both within the same period.
Ricky Whittle: two shows on television in the same week
In a 21 July 2014 interview with Channel 4, Ricky Whittle described playing Lincoln on The 100 while holding a recurring role on Mistresses. His account shows why broadcast overlap should not automatically be described as simultaneous filming.
Whittle said there was a week between filming the first season of The 100 and starting Mistresses. After filming the Mistresses season finale, he flew out to film the second season of The 100. The shows nevertheless appeared on television during the same week. He said, “To have two shows with very different characters on TV in the same week is what I always dreamed about.”

Diedrich Bader: filming three series in the same period
Diedrich Bader described a more demanding production overlap in a Backstage interview published 16 May 2019. In fall 2018, he was shooting Veep, Better Things, and American Housewife. He recalled filming American Housewife during the day, working overnight on Better Things, then returning to American Housewife, while also learning lines for all three characters. “It was kind of bonkers at times,” he said.
Bader’s account is a firsthand example of concurrent work across three series, not a claim that he was a lead on each. The distinction between starring, recurring, and supporting roles is important: an actor’s presence in multiple shows does not by itself mean the same level of billing or screen time on each one.

How television schedules make multiple roles possible
Actors’ schedules are coordinated around production needs, and the kind of overlap varies. A firsthand account may describe a tight sequence of productions, while industry reporting can show the practical tools used to manage conflicts. In a 20 August 2015 report, the Television Academy described The Good Wife casting director Mark Saks tracking episode and actor conflicts in a grid, consulting producers, and adjusting scenes and call times around performers’ theater obligations.
Saks’s example concerns television production coordinated with live theater, not an actor simultaneously filming two TV shows. It does, however, illustrate how productions can adjust schedules and scenes when cast members have competing commitments.

How to assess a claim about an actor appearing on two shows
Before calling an actor “on two shows at once,” check what the claim actually establishes:
- What overlapped? The broadcast dates, the filming dates, or both?
- What was the role level? Lead, recurring role, or supporting appearance?
- How many productions? Two, or more?
- When did it happen? Production year and broadcast period are separate facts.
- Who confirms it? An actor’s firsthand account is stronger support for their schedule than an unverified list or search excerpt.
These distinctions keep a same-week TV appearance from being mistaken for simultaneous work on two sets. The documented examples here show both: Whittle’s production windows followed one another despite broadcast overlap, while Bader described working on three series within the same period.
