Film Workers for Palestine published a pledge on September 8, 2025, asking film professionals to avoid specified work with Israeli film institutions that the campaign considers complicit in Israel’s actions in Gaza. The pledge names institutions—not every Israeli filmmaker or film—and its scope and consequences have become the focus of a dispute within the industry.
What does the pledge ask signatories to do?
The pledge asks film workers not to screen films, appear at, or otherwise work with Israeli film institutions that signatories consider implicated in genocide and apartheid against Palestinians. The organizers list festivals, cinemas, broadcasters, and production companies as examples. Those terms and allegations are the campaign’s framing; the pledge does not establish that every Israeli institution meets its criteria.
Film Workers for Palestine says the call addresses institutional complicity, giving as examples institutions that it believes whitewash or justify genocide and apartheid, or partner with the government it accuses of committing them. The campaign says it is not calling for a boycott of individuals based on identity. Its organizers say the pledge draws inspiration from the cultural boycott of apartheid South Africa; that comparison is their stated inspiration, not evidence that the campaigns or circumstances are equivalent.
Who signed it, and how many signatures were reported?
The pledge was issued by Film Workers for Palestine. When it was first published, organizers told The Guardian that it had more than 1,200 professional signatories. On September 9, 2025, the Associated Press reported the organizers’ claim that more than 3,000 industry signatures had been collected since publication. These are separate, dated organizer-reported counts, not an independently audited total or a current count.

A separate open letter opposing the pledge argued that Israeli film and television workers often criticize government policy, and that boycotting artists based on country of origin amounts to discrimination. These are opponents’ arguments, not findings about the pledge’s effects in every case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the central dispute?
Supporters frame the pledge as pressure on institutions they consider complicit, with a distinction between those institutions and individuals. Opponents question whether that distinction can be maintained in practice: refusing professional work with institutions may also affect creators, artistic exchange, and opportunities for dialogue. The disagreement therefore involves both the campaign’s institutional criteria and the likely reach of a boycott carried out through cultural work.
