Paramount and Activision announced a deal on September 2, 2025, for Paramount to develop, produce and distribute a live-action Call of Duty feature film. Later reports name Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan as its creative team, place it in the Modern Warfare universe and give it a scheduled theatrical release date of June 30, 2028. The setting and date do not confirm a particular game’s plot, characters or cast.
What Paramount and Activision announced
The September 2, 2025 announcement described a partnership for a live-action feature film based on the Call of Duty franchise. Paramount is to develop, produce and distribute the film alongside Activision. The original announcement did not name a director, writer, story, cast or release date; those details came in later reporting.
Paramount chairman and CEO David Ellison called the deal “a dream come true,” saying he was a lifelong fan of Call of Duty. Activision president Rob Kostich said the shared goal was to create a blockbuster that would appeal to the game’s community and new fans. These are statements from the companies promoting the project, not independent assessments of the film.
Paramount’s announcement described Call of Duty as having sold more than 500 million copies globally and as the best-selling video game series in the United States for 16 consecutive years. Those are figures and a characterization reported by Paramount in 2025, not a newly verified current count.

Who is making the film?
The Associated Press reported on October 30, 2025, that Peter Berg would direct, co-write and produce the film, with Taylor Sheridan also co-writing and producing. The AP described the project as live action. These credits were reported after the original deal announcement.
The AP report also notes that the first Call of Duty game debuted in 2003 as a World War II game. That history gives the franchise a broad military setting, but it does not establish which era or story the movie will depict.

What does the Modern Warfare setting mean?
In July 2026, TheWrap reported that the film would be set in the Modern Warfare universe. That is the clearest reported indication of the movie’s franchise context, but it is not confirmation that the film adapts a specific Modern Warfare game, mission or storyline. A shared universe can support a new story as well as an adaptation; the cited reporting does not say which approach the filmmakers will take.
So far, the reported setting distinguishes the project from a generic war-film description, but it does not answer which recognizable characters, events or other game elements will appear. When is the Call of Duty movie scheduled to come out?
TheWrap reported a theatrical release date of June 30, 2028. Treat it as the currently reported schedule, not a guarantee: film release dates can change, and neither the original 2025 announcement nor the cited reporting makes the date immutable. No streaming service or streaming release window is established by these reports.
