Mary Zournazi’s documentary Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals had its reported world premiere at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival on July 11, 2026. The film follows cats and other animals—including abandoned animals—to ask what care, displacement and cruelty reveal about how people treat other beings and one another. Its festival screenings were in July 2026 and are now past; the sources cited here do not establish a current release or viewing destination.
What the film is about
The title foregrounds cats, but the film’s reported scope is wider. In an interview with The Greek Herald, Zournazi said the story developed organically and extended beyond Greece to Australia, Hawaii, Paris and Thailand. The interview identifies the Acropolis cats, a rescued pelican on Tinos, animals at a sanctuary in Hawaii and Paris graffiti cat Monsieur Chat among its subjects. These details come from the interview; they are not an independent account of the film’s contents.
SBS Greek describes the documentary as using animals to consider kindness, survival, compassion and what it means to be human. Its coverage says the film explores tenderness and cruelty, and reports Zournazi’s observation that people who have experienced dispossession can show great care toward abandoned animals.
For Zournazi, as quoted by Neos Kosmos, tenderness can call people to respond with care to what they encounter, human or animal. The interview presents cats as a way into questions of displacement, belonging and the search for home. In The Greek Herald, Zournazi put the film’s broader challenge this way: “What’s wrong with our species? What stops us from taking care of animals, the environment and each other during times of crisis and war?”

World premiere and Melbourne screenings
A June 23, 2026 announcement from the Curb said the world premiere would take place at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival on July 11. SBS Greek listed a 5:00 p.m. screening that day at Cinema Nova, 380 Lygon Street, Carlton, followed by a “Meet the Filmmaker” event and live Q&A. The July 11 event is historical, not a current screening listing.
SBS Greek also listed a Greek Trilogy screening on July 13 at Henkel Street Cinema, Factory 10/102 Henkel Street, Brunswick. The Greek Herald reported the same July 13 venue but gave a different start time from SBS Greek; because the listings conflict, no start time is stated here. Both dates have passed.

How it fits Zournazi’s Greek Trilogy
The festival announcement presented Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals alongside Zournazi’s earlier documentaries Dogs of Democracy and My Rembetika Blues. SBS Greek described the new film as completing that trilogy, while Neos Kosmos called it an “unofficial” trilogy. It is therefore more precise to describe the films as works Zournazi and the coverage associate together, rather than as a formally established franchise.
| Film | Reported subject focus |
|---|---|
| Dogs of Democracy | Athens’ stray dogs |
| My Rembetika Blues | Rebetika music and family history |
| Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals | Cats and other animals, including abandoned animals |
The trilogy connection offers context for recurring interests in displacement, care and identity; it does not establish a shared plot or a formal production label.
