Co-directors Víctor Rejón and Irving Serrano describe the film as a portrait made in collaboration with the divers, rather than simply a record of the jump.
Who are the cliff divers at La Quebrada?
They are performers whose public image is often reduced to a single, daring leap. But the practice at La Quebrada is also skilled work and, for many divers, a family tradition. FIDETUR Acapulco says the diving show began in 1934 and describes generations passing diving knowledge to younger family members. Its account places the jumps at heights of up to 35 metres. FIDETUR’s anniversary account provides those historical and height figures.
The scale of the leap is only part of the story. In an interview with Mexico’s film institute, IMCINE, the directors explain that they wanted to understand the divers’ professional and personal lives and present them as artists—not just as bodies falling from a cliff. Their portrait makes room for difference within the group: co-director Víctor Rejón recounts encountering people with distinct beliefs, while Irving Serrano describes divers who venerate the Virgin, others Santa Muerte, and some who hold no religious belief. Those are individual perspectives reported by the filmmakers, not a shared creed attributed to every diver. IMCINE’s interview with the directors describes their approach and reporting.
Are there women cliff divers in Acapulco?
IMCINE describes women and men climbing and diving at La Quebrada. FIDETUR’s 2024 anniversary article, meanwhile, reported an association of 56 members, 34 of them active, and said girls had attended summer classes. Those are different kinds of information: the article does not give a current women’s roster for the association, and its membership and activity figures describe the association at the time of publication, not a current count.

What is Las voces del despeñadero about?
The 23-minute Mexican short, directed by Rejón and Serrano, is listed as a 2025 film in Spanish with English subtitles. Its title translates as Voices from the Abyss. Rather than explaining the attraction only through its danger or tourist fame, the film uses a poetic, intimate approach to draw attention to the divers’ experiences and their connection to the cliff and sea. The filmmakers’ press kit describes the film’s format and creative approach.
“We built a poem in collaboration with the divers because we wanted to explore the love they feel when they dive,” the co-directors write in the press kit. They also call it “a film about passion.” In the IMCINE interview, they say they spent two years seeking to film with the divers and that the divers participated in the process. That collaboration matters to the film’s point of view: it presents the divers not only as subjects of a famous image, but as people taking part in how their lives are represented.

Slow motion, black and white, and the sea
The directors describe using black and white and slow motion to focus attention on bodies moving between cliff and water. Serrano told IMCINE that the team captured dives at 600 to 1,000 frames per second. That figure is the co-director’s description in the interview, not an independently verified production specification. The effect, as the filmmakers frame it, is to give viewers time to attend to a movement that a live audience sees in an instant.
Filming after Hurricane Otis
The press kit says production took place after Hurricane Otis and that the storm shaped the conditions and the filmmakers’ approach. The directors’ account places the film’s intimate, collaborative method in that context without suggesting that the divers’ lives or the city’s recovery can be reduced to the spectacle of a jump.

When did the La Quebrada diving show begin, and how high are the jumps?
FIDETUR dates the beginning of the show to 1934 and gives a maximum height of 35 metres. These are the figures in its 2024 anniversary account; the height is “up to” 35 metres, not a claim that every jump is made from that height.
