Absolute Batman #15 is the issue behind the Joker-origin headline: DC’s synopsis says Alfred tells Bruce the story of the man he has pursued for years. Scott Snyder’s reported description reaches back to a clown in early-1800s Gotham, but the public synopsis does not reveal the full story or substantiate the phrase “terrifying monster.”

What Absolute Batman #15 confirms about the Joker story

DC’s official listing for Absolute Batman #15 describes Alfred telling Bruce “the story of the man he’s been chasing for years” and identifies the subject as the Joker. That establishes the issue as the origin-story installment, but DC’s synopsis does not disclose the full events of the story.

The issue is written by Scott Snyder, with pencils by Jock and colors by Frank Martin. Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin are credited on the cover. DC lists 24 pages, a Teen Plus rating, a U.S. on-sale date of December 10, 2025, and a $4.99 U.S. issue price. That is the publisher’s listed price, not a guarantee of what a retailer currently charges.

How Scott Snyder frames this version of Joker

At a Dragon Con panel, Snyder described the Absolute Joker as an inversion of Absolute Batman: wealthy, powerful and aligned with the system rather than an agent of chaos. ComicBook.com reported Snyder’s remarks on September 6, 2025; they are creator commentary, not dialogue or plot text from the comic.

“The Joker to me is always the opposite of Batman,” Snyder said. He described a Joker with “all the resources” who can create crime and also create the means to stop it, using both sides of the system to keep Bruce from becoming anything. In another reported remark, Snyder summarized the contrast this way: “If Bruce is Joker now, and he is chaos and he is disruption, then Joker is the system and order.”

Snyder also outlined the story’s historical frame: “It starts with someone you think is Joker’s great great grandfather in the early 1800s who is a clown on the streets of Gotham. It keeps revisiting this idea of who this clown was and what did he do, getting darker and darker.” This is a reported description of the story’s approach, not a complete account of the character’s past. The available synopsis and panel remarks do not establish the specific details behind the “terrifying monster” characterization.

Which Absolute Batman books contain the story?

The origin story is in issue #15, not in either of the two earlier collections below. Those volumes can provide series context, but neither collects the issue at the center of this story.

Reading option Issues collected What it offers
Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo #1–6 An entry point to the series; it does not contain #15.
Absolute Batman Vol. 2: Abomination #7–14 The run immediately before #15; its listed story connects Victor Fries, Ark M, Bane and Joker, but it does not contain #15.
Absolute Batman #15 #15 The exact issue identified by DC’s synopsis as the Joker story Alfred tells Bruce.

If you want this story specifically, check the issue number or collected-issue contents before buying a later volume; the listings above do not establish that a subsequent collection includes #15.
