Abigail is a 2024 horror-thriller that starts with a kidnapping-for-ransom job and turns into vampire survival horror. Melissa Barrera plays Joey, a medic among the kidnappers; Alisha Weir plays the captive ballerina, Abigail. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the film mixes a crime-story setup with bloody scares and dark comedy.
What is Abigail about?
A crew of criminals is hired by a mysterious fixer to abduct Abigail, a 12-year-old ballerina and the daughter of a powerful underworld figure. Their assignment is to guard her overnight in an isolated mansion while a $50 million ransom is arranged. The job changes when crew members begin disappearing and the captors realize Abigail is no ordinary child.

That shift is the film’s central hook: what looks like a conventional ransom plot becomes a fight to survive a supernatural threat. The Associated Press described it as a heist-and-monster movie that becomes a run-for-your-life thriller. The official synopsis keeps the later plot turns under wraps, so this overview does too.

Joey and Abigail’s relationship
Barrera told SYFY WIRE that she went into “protector mode” around Weir, who was leading a film with an adult ensemble. Barrera said, “We just got along from the beginning,” describing a real-life rapport that helped shape the warmth between the characters. The interview characterizes Joey’s response to Abigail as empathetic and motherly; that is an account of the dynamic, not proof that every detail was planned from the outset.
How does the film approach its vampire?
The directors said they wanted to acknowledge vampire traditions without being bound by every convention. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin told SYFY WIRE they aimed to make “our version of vampire things” while giving both the characters and audience a cursory understanding of what came before.

Tyler Gillett described the creature design as a contrast between an apparently sweet child and an ancient monster. The directors said they pursued an animalistic look while preserving Weir’s ability to speak and move freely, with practical execution and long takes among their considerations. Those are the filmmakers’ stated goals, rather than independent production findings.
How long is Abigail, and what is its rating?
Universal lists the film’s runtime as 1 hour 50 minutes. Its US rating is R for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, pervasive language, and brief drug use. The rating and content description are US-specific; other territories may classify or present the film differently.
