Bose approved it and helped popularize it. The distinction matters: Hasan is associated with the phrase adopted by the Indian Legion and Azad Hind movement, while accounts describe Bose as the figure who spread it more widely.
Who was Abid Hasan Safrani?
The Indian Express identifies him as Zain-ul Abideen Hasan, also known later as Abid Hasan Safrani or Saffrani. Its biographical account says he was the son of a Hyderabad collector, went to Germany to study engineering, met Bose, and left his studies to work with him as secretary and interpreter. The Indian Express’s 2022 explainer and its 2017 account describe his role in Bose’s circle.
Sumantra Bose’s 2022 interview with Telegraph India places Hasan among the Indian expatriates who helped Bose establish the Free India Centre in Berlin and an Indian Legion. The Legion was made up largely of British-Indian prisoners of war captured by German forces in North Africa. Hasan later travelled with Bose from Europe to Southeast Asia aboard a submarine; the interview describes Hasan as Bose’s sole companion on the 93-day journey. Scroll’s excerpt from a biography of Hasan gives the departure date as February 8, 1943, and reproduces excerpts from a 1997 interview with him. Read the Scroll excerpt.
The Indian Express also reports that Hasan later became a Major in the Indian National Army, served on the Burma front, and joined the Indian Foreign Service after independence, serving as ambassador to Denmark. This is a reported outline rather than a complete career chronology.

Who coined “Jai Hind”?
Hasan is credited with proposing the greeting that Bose’s forces adopted. The precise origin story is reported through later accounts, not settled here by an independently established record of the earliest use of the words.
According to Anvar Ali Khan, Hasan’s grand-nephew, Bose asked Hasan to find a military greeting that would work across the Indian Legion’s communities. Soldiers came from varied backgrounds and had different customary greetings. Khan’s account, reported by The Indian Express, says Hasan heard Rajput soldiers say “Jai Ramji ki,” considered “Jai Hindustan ki,” and shortened it to “Jai Hind.” The paper also cites Narendra Luther’s book in attributing the coining to Hasan. The Indian Express’s 2022 explainer recounts these attributions.

Historian Sumantra Bose places Hasan’s development of the greeting in Germany around 1942 and says Subhas Chandra Bose approved it. His Telegraph India interview likewise credits Hasan while emphasizing that the phrase served as a greeting among the movement’s freedom fighters. The careful formulation is that Hasan proposed or coined the form adopted by Bose’s forces, and Bose helped popularize it—not that either man can be shown to have originated every earlier use of the words.
What did “Jai Hind” mean, and how was it used?
The phrase is commonly rendered as “victory to India” or “long live India,” according to The Indian Express. In the Azad Hind movement, Sumantra Bose describes it as an interpersonal greeting rather than a slogan. Its later use in independent India gave it a broader public life as a national salutation and slogan.

The Indian Express reports that Jawaharlal Nehru ended his “Tryst with Destiny” speech with “Jai Hind,” and that the armed forces later adopted the phrase as a military salutation. These later uses helped carry it beyond its role among Bose’s followers. The Indian Express’s account of the phrase’s meanings and public use discusses this progression.

“Coined” can refer to shaping the concise greeting adopted by Bose’s forces; it need not establish who first uttered the words in any setting. The accounts agree on the key distinction: Hasan is credited with developing the greeting, Bose approved and popularized it, and later public use made it a national salutation. They differ in emphasis and in how they label its function—greeting, salutation, or slogan.
