His reported cause of death was heart failure; his daughter’s statement, as relayed by The Washington Post, specified congestive heart failure. The Washington Post’s obituary and The Guardian’s report confirmed his death and his place in the Detroit group’s history.
Who was Duke Fakir?
Fakir was a founding member of the Four Tops, the Detroit vocal quartet formed in 1953. The original lineup consisted of Fakir, Levi Stubbs, Lawrence Payton, and Renaldo “Obie” Benson. Before settling on the Four Tops name, the group performed as the Four Aims. It signed with Motown in 1963, after earlier work with other labels, including Chess Records. The Guardian’s obituary traces the group’s beginnings and Fakir’s long career with it.
What was Fakir’s role in the Four Tops?
Fakir sang tenor and contributed the harmonies behind Stubbs’s lead vocals. That distinction matters on the group’s best-known recordings: the unmistakable lead on songs such as “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There” was Stubbs’s, while Fakir helped shape the quartet sound around him. Motown founder Berry Gordy described Fakir as “first tenor – smooth, suave, and always sharp,” in a tribute reproduced by Rock Cellar Magazine.
The Four Tops’ catalog also includes “Baby I Need Your Loving,” “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” “Bernadette,” and “Ask the Lonely.” The Washington Post counted 24 Top 40 singles for the group; separately, The Guardian reported 11 Top 20 hits and two No. 1 songs between 1964 and 1967. Those figures describe different chart measures and periods, not Fakir’s solo achievements. The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Stevie Wonder praised its professionalism, joy, warmth, and gentlemanly conduct in remarks quoted by The Guardian.

How did Fakir become the last surviving original member?
The Four Tops’ original lineup remained together for decades, an unusual continuity for a major vocal group. After Payton died in 1997, Benson in 2005, and Stubbs in 2008, Fakir was the only surviving member of the founding quartet. He continued touring and leading the group as its steward, carrying its repertoire and identity forward while later performers joined the lineup.
Fakir published his autobiography, I’ll Be There, in 2022. Accounts place his departure from touring around the end of 2023 or in 2024: The Guardian reported that he stopped touring late in 2023, while a family statement reproduced by Rock Cellar Magazine said he toured until the end of that year and officially retired in 2024. The family characterized his career as a 70-year musical journey, a description conveyed in its statement rather than an independently audited career-duration count.

What did Fakir’s death mean for the Four Tops’ legacy?
Fakir’s death closed the chapter on the original quartet’s living membership, but not on the group’s music. His significance was not simply that he outlasted his bandmates: he had helped build the Four Tops’ blend from its Detroit beginnings and remained its performing link to the Motown era long after the founding lineup changed. The group’s enduring recordings preserve the contrast at the heart of its sound—Stubbs’s commanding lead set against the harmonies Fakir helped supply.
