Abbie Chatfield and her partner Adam Hyde criticised the March for Australia rallies held on 31 August 2025, linking their objections to racism and an incident at Melbourne’s Camp Sovereignty. In a July 2026 statement, Hyde later said his remarks in the circulating video referred to people alleged to be neo-Nazis in connection with that incident—not to ordinary rally attendees or everyone who disagreed with him.
What prompted the videos?
The videos followed the March for Australia rallies held on Sunday, 31 August 2025. ABC News described thousands of anti-immigration protesters marching through Sydney’s CBD that day. PerthNow reported on 3 September that Chatfield posted a roughly five-minute video criticising the rallies, with Hyde joining her in the clip. ABC News’ report on the Sydney march and PerthNow’s account of the video covered the events at the time.
PerthNow connected Chatfield’s criticism to an incident at Melbourne’s Camp Sovereignty, which it described as an Indigenous protest site. The outlet reported that four Indigenous people were injured and that National Socialist Network leader Thomas Sewell was charged by Victorian police in relation to the incident. Those are reported claims, not a finding of guilt; the coverage cited here does not establish the outcome of any court proceedings.
What did Chatfield and Hyde say?
Chatfield’s criticism of the rallies
PerthNow quoted Chatfield arguing that the rallies were about racism and white nationalism rather than immigration. Her criticism linked the protest movement to the Camp Sovereignty incident, according to the report. The original video and a complete transcript are not available for independent review here, so the detailed wording is best understood as PerthNow’s reporting of the clip.

Hyde’s remarks and the reaction
PerthNow described Hyde’s language about rally participants as harsh and profane. It reported a divided response among commenters: some said the pair had missed the rallies’ point, while others praised Chatfield for speaking against hatred. These were selected online reactions reported by one outlet, not polling or a reliable measure of broader public opinion.
How did rally organisers describe their position?
The March for Australia website presents the organisers’ stated case as opposition to laws they say restrict free speech and political expression. That is the organisers’ framing, not a neutral description accepted by all critics.

A 3 September 2025 Auslan90 explainer by Deaf Connect described organisers as presenting the rallies as a defence of national identity. The explainer also cited experts who argued that fear and misinformation shaped the movement, and raised housing, economic insecurity and social cohesion as part of the wider context. These accounts show why descriptions of the rallies differ: organisers’ stated rationale and critics’ interpretations should not be collapsed into one uncontested explanation. In a statement reported by Pedestrian on 10 July 2026, Hyde said the circulating clip had been edited and recontextualised. He said his remarks referred to people alleged to be neo-Nazis in connection with the Camp Sovereignty incident—not ordinary rally attendees, all participants, or people who simply disagreed with him. Hyde also acknowledged that his wording was not eloquent. This is Hyde’s later account of what he meant, as reported by Pedestrian; it is not an independent ruling on the video’s editing or full context.

Rejecting claims about his intended meaning and whom he addressed, Hyde said: “These are defamatory and entirely untrue claims against me.” Pedestrian reported Hyde’s statement on 10 July 2026.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
- The videos responded to the 31 August 2025 rallies; they should not be confused with later event material displayed on the March for Australia website.
- PerthNow reported that Chatfield and Hyde criticised the rallies and connected their objections to racism and the Camp Sovereignty incident.
- Hyde’s July 2026 clarification was a later explanation of his remarks, not a verdict on the video’s editing or an independently verified transcript.
