June 26–27, 2013: Hernandez is arrested and denied bail
Hernandez was arrested on June 26 in connection with Lloyd’s killing. The next day, a judge denied bail at a bail-review hearing, according to CBS’s timeline.
January 29, 2015: The murder trial begins
Hernandez’s murder trial began on January 29, 2015, according to WCVB.

April 15, 2015: The jury returns its verdict
The jury convicted Hernandez of first-degree murder and two firearms offenses on April 15, 2015. The Massachusetts court order addressing the case records the verdict and subsequent proceedings. The first-degree murder conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life without parole, as summarized by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
April–May 2017: Hernandez dies; the trial court vacates the conviction
Hernandez died on April 19, 2017, while his murder conviction was on direct appeal. The court order reports that his death certificate listed asphyxia by hanging as the cause and suicide as the manner. In May 2017, the trial court vacated the conviction and dismissed the indictment under the doctrine of abatement ab initio as it was then applied. That trial-court ruling was not the final appellate word.

2019: The Supreme Judicial Court addresses the doctrine
In 2019, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court issued Commonwealth v. Hernandez, 481 Mass. 582 (2019). The case is cited in later Massachusetts court material, including a 2020 Supreme Judicial Court opinion. The 2017 vacatur should therefore be understood as an intermediate procedural development, not the end of the case’s legal timeline.
