A Thursday has a potent premise: a schoolteacher takes 16 children hostage to force the country to confront sexual violence and the failures of justice. Yami Gautam gives the standoff a compelling focal point, but the film’s thriller machinery is less convincing than its anger. Its social purpose is clear; its execution is uneven.
What is A Thursday about?
Directed by Behzad Khambata, this 2022 Hindi mystery-thriller follows Naina Jaiswal (Yami Gautam), a schoolteacher whose hostage-taking turns a school into the center of a police and political crisis. ACP Catherine Alvarez (Neha Dhupia), Javed Khan (Atul Kulkarni) and Prime Minister Maya Rajguru (Dimple Kapadia) are among the figures drawn into the confrontation. The film runs 2 hours 9 minutes, according to its Rotten Tomatoes listing.

The premise recalls the vigilante structure of A Wednesday; Hindustan Times described A Thursday as a spiritual sequel, while noting the resemblance in its setup (review). But this film puts children at the immediate center of its threat, making the credibility of the standoff and the handling of its stakes especially important.
Does the thriller work?
Not consistently. The hostage premise promises pressure and tactical escalation, but several reviews found the screenplay short on procedural or technical detail. India Today and The Times of India both noted that shortcoming, even as they responded more positively to the thriller or its emotional arc (India Today; The Times of India). When the mechanics do not feel fully worked through, suspense can give way to the sense that the plot is steering characters toward its next speech or reveal.

That weakness is central to the negative response from The Indian Express. Shubhra Gupta’s review argued that the hostage threat did not feel convincing, summarizing the problem in its headline: “The chief problem with Yami Gautam film is that we do not take any of this seriously.” The paper rated the film 1.5/5, a critical judgment rather than an objective measure of its quality (review).
Hindustan Times also found problems in the screenplay and the treatment of the police characters, while acknowledging the staging and vigilante framework. Moneycontrol saw an earnest, cathartic impulse in the premise but felt emphatic dialogue, the score and abrupt character changes blunted its impact (review). Together, these responses point to a film whose tension depends more on heightened plotting and emotional insistence than on a persuasive account of how a real crisis might unfold.

How does it handle its social theme?
The hostage plot is a vehicle for a story about sexual violence and the perceived failure or laxity of justice. That anger gives the film urgency, and the premise is designed to provoke a question about what happens when people lose faith in ordinary remedies. The theme, however, cannot by itself make the thriller persuasive. The film asks viewers to take the danger to children seriously while also following a vigilante argument; if the plot’s logic feels thin, the intended catharsis becomes harder to earn.
The reviews differ in how much they value the film’s emotional force. Moneycontrol recognizes the earnestness of its social engagement, while The Times of India emphasizes its emotional arc. The Indian Express is much less persuaded by the credibility and tone. The strongest case for the film is its willingness to make injustice the engine of a mainstream thriller; its limitation is that emphatic treatment sometimes substitutes for the nuance and detail that could make that argument more affecting.

Is A Thursday worth watching?
It is worth considering if you want a socially engaged, heightened thriller and are willing to accept gaps in plausibility and procedure. Gautam’s central performance and the high-pressure setup give the film a clear point of focus, while its subject matter lends the drama a serious purpose. Viewers who need careful tactical realism, restrained dialogue or a consistently credible police response may find the construction frustrating. The critical reception reflects that divide: some reviewers respond to the cast, emotional arc and premise; others find the screenplay and tone undermine the suspense.
