It follows Jamaican friends Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe as they enter the bare-knuckle boxing underworld, where Hezekiah’s rise brings him into the orbit of gang leader Mary Carr and boxer Sugar Goodson. The series is described as inspired by true-life stories, not as a documentary or a scene-by-scene historical account.
What is A Thousand Blows about?
The drama follows Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe, best friends from Jamaica who find their way into the dangerous world of bare-knuckle boxing in 1880s East End London. As Hezekiah gains prominence, he draws the attention of Mary Carr, whom the official synopsis calls the “Queen of the Forty Elephants.” He also becomes a rival to Sugar Goodson, a boxer who styles himself the East End’s boxing emperor.

Hulu’s official description calls the series “Inspired by the true life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal East End of London in the 1880s.” That is the distributor’s description of the drama’s premise, rather than a historian’s finding about its accuracy. Hulu’s Season 1 lead sheet
Is it based on a true story?
The series is presented as inspired by true-life stories, but that wording does not establish that every character, relationship or event is reproduced exactly as it happened. The official release materials provide the setting and premise; they do not substantiate specific historical claims about the named figures, the Forty Elephants or the events shown. It is best approached as a period drama with a historical inspiration, not as a documentary or a comprehensive history of Victorian boxing.
