A Real Young Girl (Une vraie jeune fille) is Catherine Breillat’s 1970s-made directorial debut, released theatrically in France only in 2000 after rights and censorship problems. Set during a summer in rural France, it follows Alice Bonnard, an isolated adolescent whose fascination with a young sawmill worker becomes a troubling mixture of desire, fantasy, shame, and bodily unease.
A Real Young Girl (Une vraie jeune fille) is Catherine Breillat’s provocative first feature: a psychologically intense drama about Alice Bonnard, an adolescent spending the summer of 1963 at her parents’ sawmill in rural France. The film was shot in the mid-1970s but was not released theatrically in France until June 7, 2000, after rights and censorship problems. That quarter-century delay is central to understanding both its notoriety and its place in Breillat’s career.
Rather than presenting adolescence as a tidy romantic awakening, Breillat depicts desire as a collision of boredom, fantasy, shame, curiosity, and social constraint. Alice’s fascination with Jim, a young worker at the family sawmill, becomes part of an unstable inner world in which ordinary events, imagined possibilities, memories, and bodily sensations are difficult to separate.
What is A Real Young Girl about?
Alice Bonnard returns home from boarding school for a summer with her parents in the Landes region of France. Her family runs a sawmill, and the rural environment offers little relief from her alienation. She is emotionally distant from her parents, bored by provincial life, and absorbed by Jim, a young man working for her father.

The basic setup resembles a coming-of-age story, but A Real Young Girl is not a conventional romance. Alice’s relationship to Jim is filtered through silence, anticipation, embarrassment, fantasy, and frustration. The film is less interested in delivering a reassuring narrative of first love than in showing how desire can overwhelm a person who has no socially acceptable language for it.
The sawmill, family house, surrounding countryside, school memories, and bicycle rides are not simply picturesque locations. They become enclosed spaces in which Alice’s private feelings are repeatedly pressed against family authority and the expectations of provincial life. The more confined her external world appears, the more extreme and imaginative her interior life becomes.
A film about desire, shame, and fantasy
Breillat treats Alice’s sexuality as a source of contradiction rather than as a single, clearly defined emotion. Attraction is mixed with fear and shame; curiosity can become repulsion; fantasy may be more vivid than an actual encounter. The film’s deliberately uncomfortable physicality makes those contradictions difficult to keep at a safe distance.
One of the film’s defining strategies is its uncertain boundary between reality and subjective experience. Some episodes can be understood as events that happen to Alice, while others seem shaped by fantasy, memory, or psychological intensification. It is safer to describe the film as subjective and hallucinatory than to insist that every unusual moment is literally unreal. Breillat uses ambiguity to place the viewer inside Alice’s unsettled perceptions.
This approach also explains why the film can feel less like a standard narrative than an extended encounter with adolescent consciousness. Alice does not calmly explain herself. Her silence, discomfort, impulses, and images carry much of the meaning. The result is confrontational, but not because the film is merely trying to shock: its form is designed to make private desire feel physically and socially difficult.
Breillat’s first feature
A Real Young Girl was written and directed by Catherine Breillat and adapted from her own novel, Le Soupirail. As her directorial debut, it already contains many of the concerns that would recur throughout her cinema: female desire, sexual power, embarrassment, fantasy, gendered restrictions, and the conflict between bodily experience and social rules.

The film is often described as an early or unusually uncompromising exploration of female sexuality by a female filmmaker. That description is useful when it identifies the film’s perspective, but it should not reduce the work to a slogan. Breillat is not offering a simple manifesto about liberation. She shows desire as both compelling and destabilizing, while also exposing the barriers that make its expression frightening or impossible.
The film is sometimes called largely autobiographical, reflecting Breillat’s own descriptions and the relationship between the movie and her novel. That should not be taken to mean that Alice is a complete factual portrait of Breillat or that every incident is a literal memoir. The most accurate description is that the film draws on autobiographical and authorial experience while transforming it through fiction and stylization.

The unusual production and release history
The dates attached to A Real Young Girl can be confusing because production and release were separated by decades:
| Milestone | What is documented |
|---|---|
| Production | Shot in the mid-1970s, commonly identified as 1975 or 1976 |
| Original release situation | The planned theatrical exploitation was aborted or severely disrupted |
| Reasons for the delay | Reports identify complicated rights issues and censorship problems |
| French theatrical release | June 7, 2000, following a French visa issued that year |
| French classification | Prohibited to viewers under 16 |
For that reason, calling it simply a “2000 film” is misleading. It is a 1970s production that reached French theaters in 2000. The long period in which it was withheld helped create the image of a forbidden or difficult film, and its eventual release placed an early work by Breillat into the context of a career that had already become associated with controversy.
Distribution also changed over time and across territories. French records identify distributors including Artedis, Rézo Films, and Les Films du Loup. Those changes help explain why availability, runtime listings, subtitles, and physical editions may differ depending on where and when the film is accessed.
Style: corporeal, confrontational, and deliberately awkward
The film’s aesthetic is built around discomfort. Breillat focuses on bodily sensation, shame, secretions, sexual curiosity, and the gap between what Alice experiences internally and what her environment permits her to say. Acidulated colors and an intentionally abrasive atmosphere make the rural setting feel less idyllic than oppressive.

Music adds another layer to that tension. Mort Shuman is associated with the film’s songs and score, whose popular-song textures contrast with the closed social world around Alice. The music can make her experience feel heightened and adolescent at the same time: emotionally expansive, but trapped inside a provincial reality.
Viewers expecting a polished romance or a conventional psychological drama may find the film resistant and even upsetting. Its explicit imagery is not an incidental detail that can be separated from the story. Breillat uses physicality and provocation as part of the film’s attempt to represent feelings that are embarrassing, irrational, and difficult to organize into a respectable narrative.
Cast and collaborators
- Charlotte Alexandra as Alice Bonnard
- Hiram Keller as Jim
- Rita Maiden as Mrs. Bonnard
- Bruno Balp as Mr. Bonnard
- Mort Shuman associated with the film’s music
Alexandra’s performance is central to the film’s refusal to make Alice an easily readable protagonist. Alice is often silent or emotionally opaque, and the performance communicates through hesitation, physical reaction, withdrawal, and sudden intensities rather than explanatory dialogue.
Why the film remains historically important
A Real Young Girl matters first as Breillat’s directorial debut and as an early statement of the themes that would define her work. It also matters because its treatment of adolescent sexuality challenged the boundaries of what could be shown and discussed in a serious French feature. The film’s history demonstrates how censorship and distribution can shape a work’s reputation long before most audiences have the opportunity to see it.
Its significance should not be reduced to the label “erotic cinema.” That description may acknowledge the explicit material, but it leaves out the film’s psychological structure, formal experimentation, and interest in social repression. Nor is it best understood as ordinary youth entertainment. The central character is an adolescent, but the film is an adult art-house work dealing with disturbing and explicit material, and it should be approached accordingly.
The most productive way to view it is as a difficult coming-of-age film about the instability of desire. Alice is not simply discovering romance. She is confronting the fact that her body and imagination do not fit comfortably within the family, gender, and social structures surrounding her. Breillat’s achievement—and the source of the film’s continued divisiveness—is to make that conflict feel unresolved.

Who should watch it?
This is a film for viewers interested in Catherine Breillat, feminist and female-centered approaches to sexual representation, controversial French cinema, and psychologically subjective coming-of-age films. It may be especially rewarding for viewers studying how censorship, delayed distribution, and critical framing affect a film’s reputation.
It is not a suitable recommendation for viewers seeking a light romance, a nostalgic summer story, or a straightforward account of teenage first love. The explicit sexual material, the adolescent perspective, and the film’s deliberately abrasive treatment of the body require mature judgment and careful context.
