A Private Life is worth seeing for Jodie Foster’s quietly commanding performance, but it is not a straight-ahead murder mystery. Rebecca Zlotowski’s French-language film keeps changing shape—moving between noir, comedy and psychological fantasy—and its restless plotting can be as divisive as it is playful.
What is A Private Life about?
Rebecca Zlotowski’s 2025 French film, originally titled Vie privée, follows Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster), a Paris psychoanalyst unsettled by the death of a patient. Lilian suspects the death was murder and begins investigating, with help from her ex-husband Gabriel (Daniel Auteuil). Virginie Efira plays Paula, the patient whose death sets the story in motion. That premise gives the film a mystery to pursue, but the investigation is only one strand of its interest in private lives, grief and perception. The Cannes film record credits Zlotowski, Anne Berest and Gaëlle Macé as screenwriters.
Why is Jodie Foster’s performance the film’s anchor?
Foster makes Lilian’s professional composure feel like both a skill and a shield. She plays her as exacting and self-contained without making her emotionally opaque; small signs of uncertainty let the character’s vulnerability surface. That balance gives the film a center even as its genre and plot keep shifting.
The role also marks Foster’s first French-language performance, according to the New York Film Festival programme. The Associated Press praises her command of French and screen presence, while the New York Times highlights the gentleness with which she reveals Lilian’s vulnerability. In the Cannes interview, Foster described an unusually close script process: “We reviewed the whole film, word for word, for six or seven hours straight.” The finished performance feels attentive to the character’s guarded rhythms.

Is it a conventional thriller?
No. The suspected-murder investigation supplies momentum, but Zlotowski is not building a tightly procedural case in which each clue simply leads to the next. The film veers into noir, remarriage comedy and Freudian fantasy, as the AP review observes. Cannes likewise describes a deliberate mix of comedy and psychological complexity.
That instability is the film’s main pleasure and its main risk. A scene may invite a laugh, then turn toward grief or unease; a new development can redraw what seemed to be the story’s focus. The playful shifts make A Private Life feel less predictable than a standard whodunit, but viewers seeking a cleanly plotted thriller may find the detours and accumulating twists overstuffed. Tom’s Guide calls Foster transformative while arguing that the film takes too many turns and can lose itself; AP similarly finds it unwieldy, even as it admires its originality.

How do the supporting cast and relationships work?
Auteuil gives Gabriel warmth that suits the film’s affectionate, complicated ex-spouse dynamic. The New York Times finds the pair a good fit and sees Lilian and Gabriel’s amateur-detective turn as playful. Their ease together provides a counterweight to Lilian’s guardedness without turning the investigation into a conventional buddy-comedy.
The surrounding relationships add emotional texture rather than just clues. The NYFF programme identifies Vincent Lacoste as Lilian’s semi-estranged adult son, Mathieu Amalric as Paula’s grieving husband, and Efira as Paula in flashbacks. The ensemble helps the mystery reach beyond Lilian’s office, though the film’s shifting emphasis means not every thread receives the same weight.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and what should viewers know?
Choose A Private Life if you are drawn to character-led mysteries, tonal experimentation and a performance that rewards close attention. It is a less certain fit if your priority is a brisk, clue-by-clue detective story with a stable mood. The film is in French with English subtitles, according to NYFF; its listed runtime is 107 minutes there, while Cannes and AP list 105 minutes.
For US viewers, Sony Pictures Classics announced a theatrical release for January 16, 2026, following a qualifying run beginning December 5, 2025. Those are US dates, not a global schedule. Sony’s official film page currently says the movie is available on DVD and digital, linking to several retailers and platforms; availability varies by region. AP reports an R rating for language, graphic nudity, brief violence and some sexual content. The New York Times also notes a suicide-related plot thread and English-language profanity, so those reports offer useful but not exhaustive content guidance.
