A Nice Indian Boy gives the familiar meet-the-family romantic comedy a queer love story and an Indian American family at its center. Its strongest draw is the collision between Naveen and Jay’s commitment to one another and the wedding expectations of the family they want beside them. It is a warm, accessible choice for viewers looking for romance, comedy and family drama in one film.
What is A Nice Indian Boy about?
Naveen Gavaskar, a soft-spoken doctor, brings Jay Kurundkar, his white artist fiancé, home to meet his traditional Indian family. The visit sets off comic misunderstandings and emotional revelations as the family confronts its expectations about love and marriage—and tries to plan a wedding that belongs to Naveen and Jay.
The setup is recognizable from many meet-the-parents comedies, but the relationship at its center shifts the familiar wedding-rom-com formula. The question is not simply whether a couple can win over skeptical relatives; it is how the family can make room for a future that challenges its assumptions while remaining part of the couple’s life.
Does the rom-com feel fresh?
The film’s specificity comes from putting a queer relationship and an Indian American family at the heart of a traditional romantic-comedy framework. Wedding planning supplies broad comic situations, while the family conflict gives the story emotional stakes beyond whether the couple will end up together.

That balance is central to the film’s appeal: viewers can expect comedy alongside moments of reconciliation, rather than a story that treats cultural difference as a joke in itself. The premise also asks the family members to respond as individuals, not merely as representatives of tradition or modernity. The result is a welcoming, character-led spin on familiar genre beats.
