A Mouthful of Air is Amy Koppelman’s novel about Julie Davis, a wife and mother living with persistent depression after a suicide attempt. First published in 2003, the book was reissued in a 2021 movie tie-in edition as Koppelman’s film adaptation reached audiences.
What is A Mouthful of Air about?
The novel begins after Julie Davis has attempted suicide. Its story follows her efforts to live with her family while depression remains part of her life. Two Dollar Radio presents the book as a portrait of family, motherhood, survival, and depression; that is the publisher’s framing, not clinical guidance.

The novel’s emphasis is on Julie’s life and relationships in the aftermath of her attempt. The film uses a different setup, so the two versions should not be treated as having identical synopses.
When was the novel published?
Koppelman’s novel was first published in 2003 by MacAdam/Cage. Two Dollar Radio reissued it in 2021 to coincide with the film adaptation, according to Publishers Weekly’s July 14, 2021 interview with Koppelman. The publisher’s movie tie-in edition is available in paperback and ebook formats and includes an afterword by Adrienne Miller. The paperback ISBN is 9781953387196.

How does the film adaptation differ?
Sony Pictures UK’s synopsis describes Julie as a bestselling children’s author and says the birth of her second child brings a painful secret to the surface. That is the film’s setup; the publisher’s description of the novel instead foregrounds Julie’s life after her suicide attempt.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Koppelman wrote, directed, and produced the film, which stars Amanda Seyfried and Finn Wittrock, according to the official Sony Pictures UK page. In her Publishers Weekly interview, Koppelman explained that making Julie a children’s-book author changed the story while retaining themes of motherhood, guilt, and shame. She also said, “I would write it all completely differently today.”
The available interview supports discussing those adaptation choices, but it does not provide a scene-by-scene account. A precise comparison is therefore best limited to the changed setup and the themes Koppelman identified.

Which version should you choose?
- Choose the novel if you want Koppelman’s original story of Julie and her family, first published in 2003. The 2021 paperback is a physical edition of that novel.
- Choose the film if you want the screen adaptation, with Julie’s work as a children’s author and the birth of her second child central to the studio synopsis.
Sony’s page describes a digital release option, but current streaming or rental services and availability by territory are not established there. Check local listings rather than assuming a particular service carries the film.
