The figures were updated after the first Sunday reports. The Associated Press and Variety initially reported studio estimates of $157 million domestic and $301 million worldwide. Those were estimates, not the later record totals. Both outlets put the prior domestic opening benchmark, set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, at about $146 million. What the record does—and does not—mean
It is an opening record, not a lifetime-gross record
A big debut measures ticket sales during a film’s opening weekend; a lifetime gross measures its cumulative box office over its full run. The distinction changes the answer if “biggest video game movie” means the most money earned overall. Guinness reported The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s lifetime worldwide gross at $1,359,146,628 as of February 19, 2025. By comparison, Guinness, citing The Numbers, listed A Minecraft Movie’s worldwide gross at $961,187,780 as of February 25, 2026. Guinness’s opening-record page gives the dated Mario lifetime figure; its live-action adaptation record page gives the Minecraft figure.

Domestic and worldwide totals are different comparisons
The $162.75 million figure is domestic—U.S. and Canada—while $313.7 million is worldwide. The worldwide total includes markets beyond North America. Keep each figure attached to its geography: the domestic result is not the worldwide opening, and neither figure is a lifetime total.
The reported totals changed after Sunday estimates
The Sunday reports from AP and Variety described early studio estimates. Guinness’s record page gives the later three-day figures, dated April 6, 2025. A separate Screen International search-result report said Warner Bros. confirmed a $163 million North American opening on Monday, but that report is not needed to establish the record; the precise record figures here follow Guinness.

Why the opening drew attention
A Minecraft Movie was the first live-action big-screen adaptation of the game, according to Warner Bros.’ official movie site. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, it follows four characters who enter the Overworld. Warner Bros. listed the North American theatrical release as April 4, 2025, with international rollout beginning April 2; Warner Bros. distributes worldwide and Legendary East distributes in China.
Warner Bros. executives welcomed the audience response in AP’s April 6, 2025 report. Pamela Abdy, co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, said, “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater.” Co-chair and CEO Michael DeLuca said, “We made the movie for the fans and the fans exceeded our expectations.” Those are the studio leaders’ assessments, not independent evidence that one particular factor caused the opening.

Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian described the movie as a theatrical event, saying, “This is the perfect small screen to big screen alliance. It became a must-see theatrical event. Awareness was off the charts.” He also said, “Video games were once a genre that had very mixed results at the box office, but the code has finally been cracked.” These comments capture an interpretation of the result; the record itself is established by the reported box-office figures.
