If you want a seasonal comedy for the atmosphere more than the surprises, it may fit the bill; viewers looking for a fresh plot may be less satisfied.
What is A Merry Little Ex-Mas about?
Kate and Everett are recently divorced and hope to spend one last amicable Christmas together as a family before Kate sells their house. Their plan gets complicated when Everett brings his new girlfriend into the picture, stirring up unresolved feelings and disrupting Kate’s idea of a perfect final holiday. Netflix’s listing describes the film as a romantic comedy; its Media Center synopsis adds the detail of Everett’s younger, successful new partner.
Does the cozy holiday atmosphere make up for the predictable story?
That depends on what you want from a Christmas rom-com. TechRadar critic Jasmine Valentine, reviewing the film on November 12, 2025, describes it as predictable and implausible, while praising its picture-perfect holiday aesthetic and campy tone. In her view, it is closer to a comfort watch than a story built around genuine surprises: the seasonal gloss and easygoing mood are part of the appeal, but they do not make the plot less familiar.
Valentine also highlights the film’s representation and Jameela Jamil’s performance. She finds Melissa Joan Hart less prominent than the pairing of Hart and Clueless star Alicia Silverstone might lead viewers to expect. Those are one critic’s judgments, not evidence of a broader critical or audience consensus. Her phrase for the film’s appeal is “just you, a cosy blanket, and vibes.” Read her full review at TechRadar.

Who is in the cast, and who made the film?
Alicia Silverstone leads the ensemble with Oliver Hudson, Jameela Jamil, Pierson Fodé and Melissa Joan Hart. Steve Carr directed and Holly Hester wrote the film, according to Netflix Tudum. Carr told Tudum that the story’s upheaval changes the characters’ perspective, drawing a comparison to It’s a Wonderful Life. That classic-film reference signals the movie’s familiar holiday-romance territory rather than a promise of an unexpected reinvention.
When did it come out, and where can you watch it?
A Merry Little Ex-Mas premiered on Netflix on November 12, 2025, according to Netflix Tudum. Netflix lists it as a 2025, TV-PG romantic comedy and currently offers it for offline download on its title page. Availability and download options can vary by territory and change over time.

Is it worth watching?
Choose it for the polished Christmas setting, campy energy and low-pressure mood, not for an original plot or a substantial showcase for every member of its cast. The central question is whether you enjoy a predictable seasonal story when the atmosphere is the point. If that sounds like the right kind of holiday viewing, this film has a clear comfort-watch proposition; if you need plot surprises, its familiarity is the chief drawback.
