A Man Called Otto is a 2022 comedy-drama about a grieving widower whose prickly routines are disrupted by the family next door. Tom Hanks plays Otto Anderson, and Mariana Treviño plays Marisol, the neighbor who keeps drawing him into the lives of his community. Directed by Marc Forster and written by David Magee, the film adapts Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove as well as the earlier Swedish film adaptation.
What is A Man Called Otto about?
Otto Anderson is a widower who has withdrawn from the people around him. When a lively young family moves in nearby, Marisol challenges his habits and persistence turns everyday encounters into an unlikely friendship. Sony describes the story as one of love, loss, and finding family in unexpected places. The film’s narrative also moves between present-day clashes with neighbors and happier memories of Otto and his wife, as the Associated Press review notes.
The neighborhood is more than a backdrop: ordinary requests and interruptions begin to pull Otto back into contact with other people. The story blends comedy and drama, though its grief and suicide-attempt themes are serious parts of the plot.
Cast and filmmakers
Tom Hanks stars as Otto. The principal cast listed by Sony also includes Mariana Treviño, Rachel Keller, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Truman Hanks, and Mike Birbiglia. Marc Forster directed the film, and David Magee wrote the screenplay.

Is it based on a book or another film?
Yes. The 2022 film is connected to two earlier works: Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove and Hannes Holm’s Swedish film adaptation of that novel. The book is not titled A Man Called Otto, and the English-language film is a separate adaptation rather than the Swedish movie under a new name. Sony’s UK page identifies both the novel and Holm’s film as sources.
For a comparison, consider the versions’ language and cultural setting, characterization, performances, adaptation choices, and tone. They tell related versions of the story, but should not be assumed to match scene for scene. Viewers who prefer reading can start with Backman’s novel; those interested in the Swedish-language predecessor can seek out Holm’s film.

Runtime, rating, and content notes
The Associated Press reported a runtime of 126 minutes and a PG-13 rating for mature thematic material involving suicide attempts and language. That content may be difficult for some viewers; the film’s comic and community-centered elements do not remove those themes.
