Liam Payne and Cheryl first met on The X Factor in 2008, years before they became a couple. Their relationship began around late 2015 or early 2016; they welcomed their son, Bear, in March 2017, and announced their separation in July 2018. Their public timeline is clear, but neither parent gave a definitive private reason for the breakup.
How Liam Payne and Cheryl first met
Payne and Cheryl met in 2008 on The X Factor. He was 14 and auditioning; she was a judge. Payne did not progress beyond boot camp in that attempt. He returned to the programme in 2010 and went on to become a member of One Direction. Their first meeting was therefore many years before their relationship began.
The Guardian’s 2018 account and The Independent’s 2024 timeline both describe that early encounter.
When they became a couple
Accounts place the start of their relationship in late 2015 or early 2016. The Guardian’s 2018 report gave late 2015, while its 2019 interview described the relationship as beginning in early 2016; ITV’s 2018 report said they had been together since 2016. The sources do not establish a single exact start date.

“We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It’s been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.”
The statement expressed their decision and their request for privacy; it did not give a specific cause for the split. The public reports establish the chronology, not a definitive private explanation. Speculation about work, family, age difference or publicity should not be treated as fact.

What they said about co-parenting
In a December 2019 Guardian interview, Payne said they continued to co-parent. He reflected on the challenge of understanding his place in the relationship between a child and a father: “Finding your feet in that relationship between child and father – it’s difficult.” The interview also described his use of phone and FaceTime contact when work took him away.

After Payne’s death in October 2024, Cheryl referred to him publicly as the father of their seven-year-old son and voiced concern about Bear encountering exploitative media coverage.
