Spoilers for season 1, episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Egg is Prince Aegon Targaryen, the youngest son of Prince Maekar. He reveals his identity during the Ashford confrontation after Dunk intervenes to protect Tanselle from Prince Aerion.
Why Egg reveals himself at Ashford
At Ashford, Prince Aerion attacks the puppet performers and breaks Tanselle’s finger. Dunk, played by Peter Claffey, steps in and fights Aerion. As the confrontation escalates, Egg—played by Dexter Sol Ansell—identifies himself as Prince Aegon Targaryen to stop Aerion from killing Dunk. Aerion is Egg’s older brother, so the disclosure makes clear that the dispute involves members of the royal family, not just a wandering boy and his knight.
Claffey described Dunk’s immediate motivation this way: “I don’t think he’s thinking too much about setting an example for Egg in that moment.” The line is from the actor’s discussion of Dunk’s response to the crisis, rather than a statement about Egg’s identity. TV Insider’s episode 3 coverage discusses the reveal and the cast’s account of the scene.
What the reveal means for the story
Until the disclosure, Egg has been travelling with Dunk under a name that conceals his royal status. His real name changes how the people at Ashford must understand the conflict: Dunk has defended a performer from a prince, while the boy beside him is another prince and Aerion’s younger brother. The show’s reveal is in season 1, episode 3; it is distinct from later developments in the season.

How the show relates to the Dunk and Egg books
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. Warner Bros. Discovery describes the series as following the unlikely pairing of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. Penguin Random House’s collected edition description likewise says Egg’s true name is hidden from Dunk and the people they encounter. The show therefore brings a concealed identity into the open for its audience; viewers who already know the novellas may recognize it before the episode’s reveal.
The first season draws on The Hedge Knight, the novella associated with the Ashford story. In discussing adaptation, co-creator and showrunner Ira Parker said, “Very early on, all of us knew that we weren’t going to add any story,” while explaining that character material helped fill the season’s six half-hour episodes. That distinction matters: character development for the television format does not mean the Ashford reveal is a separate story from the source novella.

The collected book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms from Penguin Random House, brings together the three prequel novellas. The publisher describes their setting as nearly a century before A Game of Thrones and says the hardcover includes more than 160 illustrations by Gary Gianni; those are publisher descriptions of the book and its setting. Penguin Random House also lists an HBO tie-in paperback, ISBN 9798217302574, dated January 13, 2026. The book is optional background, not a prerequisite for understanding the episode. The Los Angeles Times’ interview with Parker also describes the stories as taking place around 100 years before Game of Thrones.
