Spoilers for the Dunk and Egg stories, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and later Targaryen history follow.
The boy called Egg is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen, the youngest son of Prince Maekar. He will eventually become King Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Unlikely. That makes him part of the direct family line leading to the Mad King Aerys II, Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.
The simplest way to understand the genealogy is to start with the reigning king during the Ashford tournament, Daeron II Targaryen, and follow the branch through his son Maekar to Egg.

This is the family branch that matters most in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The royal figures surrounding the Ashford tournament are not unrelated nobles who happen to share a name: they belong to the ruling Targaryen dynasty, and their positions within the family affect both their behavior and the future succession.
Where the series fits in Targaryen history
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories. It follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight, and his young squire, Egg. The official series material identifies Egg as a Targaryen prince hiding his identity, while Martin’s source stories provide the relationship and historical setting.
The story takes place roughly a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The Ashford tournament occurs in 209 AC, substantially after the Dance of the Dragons, which took place from 129 to 131 AC. Consequently, Daeron II, Maekar, and Aegon V should be understood as later descendants of the Targaryen dynasty seen in House of the Dragon, not as immediate members of Rhaenyra or Daemon’s generation.
For readers who want the literary source behind the adaptation, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms book collects the Dunk and Egg novellas. It is source material for the characters and their early relationship, not a separate official family-tree guide or a guarantee that every television detail will follow the books identically.

King Daeron II Targaryen, called Daeron the Good, is the reigning monarch during the Ashford tournament. He is the father of both Baelor Breakspear and Maekar.
That gives him two important relationships to Egg:
- Daeron II is Egg’s grandfather.
- He is the father of the branch from which Egg descends.
Daeron’s eldest son, Baelor, is the expected heir. His fourth son, Maekar, is Egg’s father. The difference between those two branches explains why Baelor’s household carries such high political importance while Maekar’s children remain farther from the throne at the beginning of the story.
Prince Baelor Breakspear: Maekar’s brother and Egg’s uncle
Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen is Daeron II’s eldest son and heir to the Iron Throne. He is therefore Maekar’s older brother and Egg’s uncle.
Baelor’s son, Valarr Targaryen, is Egg’s first cousin. Valarr belongs to the line that stands closer to the succession than Egg’s branch does during the tournament period.

Baelor’s family connection also directly affects Dunk. He recognizes the late Ser Arlan of Pennytree and supports Dunk’s right to enter the Ashford tournament. In practical terms, a prince of the ruling dynasty gives a hedge knight the status and protection necessary to participate. The connection is therefore more than background genealogy: it helps determine how Dunk enters the story and why the tournament’s dispute becomes a royal matter.
Rank #2
Prince Maekar: the father of Egg and his siblings
Prince Maekar Targaryen is Daeron II’s fourth son and the father of the generation most directly involved in the series. He is a stern, martial figure whose children include four sons—Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, and Aegon—as well as Daella and Rhae.
Maekar is not king when the story begins. His position is important because the older and more prominent branches of the family stand between his children and the throne. Yet a series of deaths and succession decisions eventually makes Maekar’s youngest son the king.
Maekar’s six children are easy to confuse because several carry familiar Targaryen names. The relationships are:
| Character | Relationship to Egg | Why the character matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daeron “the Drunken” | Older brother | His absence from the Ashford tournament helps Egg meet Dunk. |
| Aerion “Brightflame” | Older brother | His cruelty toward Dunk and Egg leads to the Trial of Seven. |
| Aemon | Older brother | He becomes Maester Aemon and later refuses the crown. |
| Daella | Older sister | Part of Maekar’s immediate family branch. |
| Aegon “Egg” | Youngest brother | He becomes King Aegon V. |
| Rhae | Older sister | Part of the same immediate family branch. |
Daeron the Drunken: Egg’s eldest brother
Prince Daeron Targaryen is Maekar’s eldest son and Egg’s older brother. He is often called Daeron the Drunken.
He is expected to take part in the Ashford tournament but abandons that responsibility and takes Egg with him. Egg’s resulting encounter with Dunk is the event that establishes the central partnership of the story: Dunk becomes the hedge knight, while Egg becomes his apparently ordinary squire.
Daeron is not the same person as King Daeron II. Daeron II is Egg’s grandfather and the reigning king. Daeron the Drunken is Maekar’s son and Egg’s brother. The shared name is one of the major sources of confusion in the family tree.
Daeron later dies leaving a daughter, Vaella Targaryen. When the succession is reconsidered after Maekar’s death, Vaella is passed over by the Great Council because of the council’s view of her capabilities.
Aerion Brightflame: Egg’s dangerous older brother
Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen is Maekar’s second son and Egg’s older brother. His treatment of Dunk and Egg at Ashford creates the conflict that leads to the Trial of Seven.
Rank #3
The trial is also a family confrontation. Aerion fights on one side, while Baelor fights alongside Dunk. Maekar fights on Aerion’s side, placing a father and son opposite Baelor, Maekar’s older brother. What begins as a dispute involving a hedge knight therefore becomes a clash within the royal family.
Aerion dies before Maekar and leaves an infant son, Maegor Targaryen. Maegor’s age later prevents the council from choosing him as king. His claim exists, but a child is not considered a practical choice for the unsettled succession.
Aemon Targaryen: Egg’s brother and the future Maester Aemon
Aemon Targaryen is Maekar’s third son and Egg’s older brother. He is the child who gives Aegon the nickname “Egg.”
Aemon is eventually sent to the Citadel, where he becomes a maester. This is the same Aemon viewers know in Game of Thrones as the elderly Maester Aemon at Castle Black. He is not Egg’s father, uncle, or a distant namesake. He is Egg’s actual older brother.
When the royal succession becomes uncertain, the Great Council considers Aemon for the crown. Aemon refuses, having chosen the life of a maester, and thereby allows his younger brother Aegon to become king.
This decision is the most direct bridge between the two eras. The young Aemon seen in the earlier story belongs to the same immediate family as Egg; the aged Maester Aemon encountered at the Wall is that brother decades later.
Egg is Prince Aegon, not a separate character
Egg is the nickname of Prince Aegon Targaryen, Maekar’s youngest son. He hides his royal identity while serving as Dunk’s squire.

However, his education, manners, knowledge of royal affairs, and occasional assumption of authority hint at his real status. Egg is trying to experience life away from court, but his bloodline remains dangerous: anyone who discovers that Dunk is traveling with a prince may treat the pair very differently.
Rank #4
The relationship between Dunk and Egg works because each supplies what the other lacks. Dunk understands the practical codes of the road and the responsibilities of a knight. Egg has the education and political perspective of a prince. Their friendship is simultaneously a personal bond and a meeting between common life and dynastic power.
How Egg becomes King Aegon V
Egg’s path to the throne opens only after the senior claims in his branch become unavailable or politically impractical.
- Daeron the Drunken is already dead and leaves Vaella.
- Aerion is dead but leaves the infant Maegor.
- Aemon has taken maester’s vows and refuses the crown when considered.
- Aegon remains available, although some nobles distrust his unconventional upbringing and his willingness to interfere in affairs outside the expected role of a prince.
After Maekar dies in 233 AC, a Great Council addresses the disputed succession. The council first offers the crown to Aemon, but he refuses it. The crown then goes to Aegon, who becomes King Aegon V Targaryen.
He is called Aegon the Unlikely because he is the fourth son of a fourth son. Egg is therefore not merely a royal companion in the series: he is the future king whose descendants include the last major Targaryen rulers of Game of Thrones.
Egg’s descendants and the line to Daenerys
Aegon V marries Betha Blackwood. His children include Duncan, Jaehaerys II, Shaera, Daeron, and Rhaelle. The direct line to the Game of Thrones Targaryens runs through Jaehaerys II:
Aegon V Targaryen “Egg” + Betha Blackwood
└── Jaehaerys II Targaryen
└── Aerys II Targaryen, “the Mad King” + Rhaella Targaryen
├── Rhaegar Targaryen
├── Viserys Targaryen
└── Daenerys Targaryen
The essential sequence is:
Egg → King Aegon V → King Jaehaerys II → King Aerys II → Daenerys Targaryen.
Maester Aemon is not on this direct parent-to-child line, but he remains part of it as Egg’s brother. Because of that relationship, Maester Aemon is Daenerys’s great-great-uncle.
How the family connects to House of the Dragon
The Targaryens in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms descend from the dynasty whose earlier history includes the civil war shown in House of the Dragon. However, many generations separate the two stories.
Best Value
Rhaenyra Targaryen, Daemon Targaryen, and the other central figures of the Dance of the Dragons should not be placed immediately above Daeron II, Maekar, or Aegon V in a compact parent-child chart. The correct relationship is a long dynastic descent, not a direct family step.
This distinction is particularly important when comparing television adaptations. A chart for the Dunk and Egg era should identify whether it presents book genealogy, television continuity, or a combined franchise overview. The series adapts Martin’s stories, but a television family-tree graphic should not automatically be treated as an official genealogy for every version of the wider franchise.
Common Targaryen family-tree mistakes
- Egg is not a non-Targaryen boy. Egg is Prince Aegon, later King Aegon V.
- Maester Aemon is Egg’s brother. He is not Egg’s father or uncle.
- Baelor and Maekar are brothers. Baelor is the elder son and heir; Maekar is Daeron II’s fourth son.
- Daeron the Drunken is not Daeron II. Daeron II is Egg’s grandfather and king; Daeron the Drunken is Egg’s older brother.
- Aegon V is not Aegon the Conqueror. They are different kings separated by many generations.
- Maegor is Aerion’s infant son. He is not another name for Maekar’s son Aegon.
- Maester Aemon is not on the direct line to Daenerys. He is connected as Aegon V’s brother, while Daenerys descends through Aegon V’s son Jaehaerys II.
Book genealogy and television continuity
The family relationships described here follow the established Dunk and Egg material and the Targaryen genealogy associated with it. The HBO/Max series is an adaptation, so individual presentation details may differ from Martin’s books as episodes are released.

For the clearest spoiler-safe explanation, remember the two central facts: Egg is Maekar’s youngest son, and Egg eventually becomes Aegon V. Once those are in place, Maester Aemon is his brother, Baelor is his uncle, and Daenerys is a much later descendant through Aegon V’s son Jaehaerys II.
