Its focus gives the six-episode first season warmth and emotional force. The qualification is tonal: the jokes can get deliberately crude, and one late flashback interrupts the momentum. “Near-perfect” is a strong critical judgment, not a claim that every viewer will love those choices.
What is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms about?
The series follows Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, and Egg, the boy who becomes his squire. It adapts The Hedge Knight, the first story in George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. The tale takes place roughly a century before Game of Thrones, in a Westeros where the fortunes of two travelers—not the fate of the realm—provide the center of attention. Rotten Tomatoes’ series overview and season page identify the source story and setting (Rotten Tomatoes Editorial; Rotten Tomatoes season page).
Dunk is a hedge knight: a wandering, comparatively low-status knight without a powerful house behind him. That position makes him a useful guide to a world usually seen from castles and council chambers. The story’s central tournament brings him into contact with nobles and their rivalries, but the stakes stay personal: what kind of knight he is, what he owes others, and how he and Egg learn to rely on one another.
Why the smaller scale works
The series’ appeal is not that it makes Westeros inconsequential; it changes whose consequences matter. Instead of treating a tournament as a stop on the way to a succession crisis, it makes the tournament and Dunk’s place in it the story. The result is more intimate than the franchise’s sprawling political dramas, while still drawing on the same hierarchy, customs, and dangers.

#1 Best Overall
Showrunner Ira Parker told the Associated Press that keeping the story focused and avoiding side quests was “100% a function of the underlying material.” The first season runs six episodes averaging about 35 minutes, according to the AP’s June 2026 report. That compactness suits a novella adaptation: it makes the season easy to approach without making the story feel like a pilot for a much larger plot. AP reporter Andrew Dalton captured the contrast in the article’s opening line: “Ser Duncan is tall, but his story is small.” (Associated Press.)
How it compares with Game of Thrones
| What to compare | A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Game of Thrones |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and politics | A tournament-centered journey with a close focus on Dunk and Egg. | A sprawling struggle involving ruling houses, kingdoms, and competing claims to power. |
| Point of view | Follows two outsiders navigating a world above their station. | Moves among a broad ensemble of nobles, leaders, and other players. |
| Emotional emphasis | Leans on the developing bond between its leads and the consequences of their choices. | Spreads attention across a large cast and realm-wide conflicts. |
| Comic tone | Uses earthy, sometimes scatological humor that may be a draw or a turnoff. | Its tone also varies, but this season’s crude jokes are a conspicuous part of its identity. |
The comparison is about emphasis, not a promise that the new series has no politics or that its predecessor lacked personal stories. It asks viewers to spend less time tracking the board and more time with two people trying to find their footing on it.
What works best—and what may not
Dunk and Egg give the story a human center
The partnership is the season’s main source of momentum and feeling. Dunk’s size and title do not make him a seasoned power broker; Egg’s youth does not make him a simple tagalong. Their contrasting positions give their exchanges texture and let the show explore honor and responsibility at ground level. That focus is a large part of why the story can feel emotionally substantial despite its modest footprint.

The action stays close to the characters
TVLine reviewer Dave Nemetz, who said he had watched all six episodes before the premiere, praised the show’s rustic approach and grounded action. The tournament gives the season a clear through-line, and its confrontations feel connected to the people involved rather than staged as a display of mass spectacle. Nemetz gave the season a B+ and described its smaller approach as a welcome change from Game of Thrones’ pomp and pageantry (TVLine, Jan. 13, 2026).

The humor is a genuine taste test
The comedy is not all polished banter. Nemetz found that the scatological jokes sometimes become too much. That is a meaningful caveat, not a minor detail to brush aside: viewers who enjoy earthy comedy may find it part of the series’ rough-edged charm, while viewers who do not may find it repeatedly breaks the spell. The humor is one of the clearest ways this show distinguishes itself from the grander, more solemn stretches of its predecessor.
A late flashback slows the finish
Nemetz also singled out an extended flashback late in the season as a drag on momentum. Because the first season is short and its tournament gives it a strong central line, a substantial detour can feel especially noticeable. The show’s compactness is an advantage overall, but it does not mean every episode moves at the same pace.

Is it a faithful adaptation?
The season’s narrow focus reflects the source novella rather than an attempt to build a sprawling new plot around it. Parker told the AP that avoiding side quests follows the underlying material; he also said of season two, “If anything, I’d say Season 2 might feel even smaller.” That second comment concerns the follow-up, not a direct assessment of season one. It does, however, underline the creative approach: adapt the individual Dunk and Egg stories on their own terms instead of automatically inflating them to match the scale of the original series.
For viewers familiar with Martin’s writing, the central adaptation question is less whether the show has the same broad ambitions as Game of Thrones and more whether its chosen story has room to breathe on screen. The short season largely preserves that concentrated shape. Nemetz’s criticism of the late flashback is a useful counterpoint: adaptation choices can still affect pacing even when the larger approach is restrained.
Can you watch it without seeing Game of Thrones?
The premise is clear on its own: a hedge knight takes on a young squire and enters a tournament in a society governed by rank and reputation. Its earlier setting and two-lead focus make it an understandable entry point for someone drawn to a more personal fantasy adventure. The available reporting establishes the timeline, source story, and focus; it does not establish that prior knowledge is wholly unnecessary. A new viewer can follow the basic setup, while a returning one may recognize more of the world and its history.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Watch if you want a Westeros story built around an appealing two-person partnership, a tournament, and personal stakes rather than a dense web of rulers and wars.
- It may be a particularly good fit if you like adaptations that keep close to a focused source story and do not stretch every plot into a larger franchise event.
- Be cautious if scatological comedy reliably puts you off, or if you expect the constant political maneuvering and kingdom-spanning spectacle of Game of Thrones.
- For pacing expectations, the first season’s six episodes average about 35 minutes, but the late flashback was a specific momentum concern for TVLine’s reviewer.
Verdict
As a critical judgment, “near-perfect” fits the season’s strongest achievement: it understands that another Westeros story does not need to be bigger to matter. By adapting The Hedge Knight as a compact tale about Dunk, Egg, and a tournament, the series offers a humane, accessible counterpoint to Game of Thrones. Its crude humor and late-season pacing detour keep it from being an uncomplicated recommendation, but neither erases the pleasure of a fantasy story that knows whose fortunes it wants us to follow.
AP reported in June 2026 that Parker was making a second season based on Martin’s The Sworn Sword. He suggested it might feel even smaller; that is his description of the next story, not a confirmed premiere-date or release-status update (Associated Press).
