Spoilers for episode 3, “The Squire.” Egg is Aegon Targaryen, Prince Maekar’s son and Aerion’s younger brother. A fortune-teller predicts that Egg will become king and die in fire. The episode ends with Egg revealing his identity to stop Aerion’s guards from hurting Dunk; the prophecy’s connection to Egg’s later history goes beyond what the episode shows.
What happens in episode 3, “The Squire”?
The episode unfolds during the Ashford tournament, where Dunk’s hopes of competing run up against the rules and the people who control the event. Egg tends Dunk’s horse and learns that only highborn knights have the right of first challenge that day, leaving Dunk unable to enter the joust yet.
Egg asks whether he can stay on as Dunk’s squire after the tournament. Before Dunk can answer, Master of Games Plummer offers him a private bargain: a fixed joust meant to recover tournament expenses. Dunk is offended by the proposal’s dishonesty and refuses to treat a match as something to rig.
The tournament grows more dangerous when Prince Aerion acts dishonorably toward Ser Humfrey Hardyng’s horse, provoking a disturbance among the crowd. Later, Egg watches Tanselle’s puppet show, in which a dragon is slain. Aerion takes offense, hurts Tanselle, and Dunk attacks him. Aerion’s guards seize Dunk; Egg orders them to stop and calls Aerion his brother. That command exposes the identity he has been hiding.

The violence that follows turns their easy companionship into a moment when Egg must decide whether to remain concealed or protect Dunk.
Who is Egg?
Egg is Aegon Targaryen, one of Prince Maekar’s sons and Aerion’s younger brother. He has cut his hair and hidden his royal identity while serving as Dunk’s squire. His ability to command the guards makes his status clear before he confirms it directly to Aerion.

Egg’s explanation that he did not want to look like Aerion gives the reveal a personal edge: his disguise is not only a way to move unnoticed, but also a rejection of the brother he fears becoming. Showrunner Ira Parker said the reveal was designed to matter as a character moment even for viewers who already knew Egg’s identity. Recounting a point from Ryan Condal, Parker said Egg’s secret “is not a plot point, it’s a character attribute, and that it could come out earlier.” TheWrap’s interview with Parker discusses that approach.
What does the fortune-teller predict for Egg?
The fortune-teller gives Dunk an encouraging but vague prediction: he will know great success and become richer than a Lannister. Egg receives a much darker forecast: “You shall be king and die in a hot fire and worms shall feed upon your ashes.” The fortune-teller adds, “And all who know you shall rejoice in your dying.” TheWrap’s episode analysis and TVLine’s recap report the exchange.

Episode-only reading
Within the episode, the prediction is ominous foreshadowing, not an explanation of Egg’s future. The story establishes his royal identity and lets the audience hear the fortune, but it does not show his reign or death. The final line is also explicit, while its meaning remains open at this point in the story.
Later-lore spoilers: Aegon V and Summerhall
The following draws on later book lore and spoils events beyond episode 3. Egg eventually becomes King Aegon V. TheWrap connects the fortune’s fire prediction to the tragedy at Summerhall, where Aegon dies in a disastrous fire during his attempts to bring dragons back. The precise circumstances of the disaster are not settled: the article notes that ritual details remain unclear, with sorcery and wildfire reported as possibilities.

The fortune-teller’s claim that those who knew Egg would rejoice in his death is not confirmed by the episode as a specific prediction about high-lord politics. TheWrap interprets it as possibly reflecting resentment among high lords and the consequences of Aegon’s later choices. That is a reading of the line, not a definitive explanation established on screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does Egg reveal himself to save Dunk?
Egg reveals his standing because Dunk is in immediate danger. After Dunk attacks Aerion for hurting Tanselle, Aerion’s guards restrain him. Egg can make them stop only by invoking the authority his concealed identity gives him. His disclosure is therefore both a rescue and a costly choice: it ends his ability to pass simply as Dunk’s squire.

The moment also brings the episode’s two central tensions together. Dunk has refused a dishonest deal and acted on his sense of right, while Egg has tried to live outside the expectations attached to his family. When Aerion’s violence leaves Dunk helpless, Egg chooses loyalty over concealment.
Where does the episode fit in the Dunk and Egg story?
“The Squire” is listed as a 31-minute episode dated February 1, 2026, in TV Guide’s season 1 episode guide. The series adapts the Dunk and Egg stories, set roughly a century before Game of Thrones, according to the Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom’s official franchise description.
For readers who want the source story behind Dunk and Egg, George R. R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight is the relevant starting point. Check the edition and contents of a listing before buying: the book recommendation is about the source material, not a special episode tie-in.
