In an interview with journalist and a-ha biographer Jan Omdahl, Harket said he had kept the diagnosis private beyond a small circle because he wanted privacy and quiet to work. He said accepting the diagnosis itself was not difficult; managing treatment and its effects was more challenging.
What Harket disclosed
Harket’s interview appeared on a-ha’s official website on June 4, 2025, and was reproduced in Norwegian by Sony Music Norway. He said he had delayed making the news public because he wanted space to work without attention focused on his health. He did not give an exact date for his diagnosis.
“I’ve got no problem accepting the diagnosis,” Harket told The Guardian, which reported on the interview. His account made a distinction between coming to terms with Parkinson’s and the continuing practical work of managing medication, side effects, sleep, and brain stimulation.
What he said about treatment
Harket described undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures at Mayo Clinic in 2024. According to Omdahl’s interview, a procedure in June implanted electrodes deep in the left side of Harket’s brain. The electrodes connect to a pacemaker-like device beneath the skin of the chest and deliver electrical stimulation. A similar procedure was performed on the right side in December.

The interview said both procedures were successful. Harket reported that on good days many physical symptoms were nearly absent, but also described ongoing symptoms and side effects that required careful balancing. “It’s a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects,” he said in The Guardian’s account.
This describes Harket’s reported care, not a recommendation or a typical treatment plan for other people. The NHS says Parkinson’s treatment may include medication and supportive therapies, and in some cases brain surgery; it also notes there is currently no cure. Can Morten Harket sing now?
In the interview, Harket said Parkinson’s had affected his voice and that, at the time, he did not feel like singing. Asked whether he could sing at all then, he said he did not know. “I don’t feel like singing, and for me that’s a sign,” he told The Guardian.
Those comments expressed uncertainty about his voice and creative future; they were not an announcement that he had retired. No future performance schedule was provided.

How a-ha responded
Bandmate Magne Furuholmen said future a-ha activities would be adjusted around Harket’s circumstances, telling The Guardian they “will of course be tuned to suit Morten’s situation”. Harket also addressed fans directly: “Don’t worry about me.”

Parkinson’s is a condition of the nervous system. The NHS lists tremor, slow movement, and muscle stiffness among its main symptoms; other symptoms can also occur. Symptoms and their effects vary, so Harket’s account should not be taken as a description of what every person with Parkinson’s experiences or needs.

The Sony Music Norway release carrying Omdahl’s article said that approximately 13,000 people in Norway and at least 10 million worldwide have the disease. Those are figures reported in that 2025 release, not independently verified current estimates here.
