It draws on Hemingway’s wartime experience, but Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley are fictional characters, not a record of a literal romance.
What is A Farewell to Arms about?
The novel follows Frederic Henry, an American serving as an ambulance driver with the Italian army, and Catherine Barkley, an English nurse. Their relationship develops against the Italian front during World War I, where military duty, injury, and the instability of wartime life shape the story.
Rather than treating the romance and the war as separate subjects, the novel places private attachment inside a world governed by danger and loss. The National Endowment for the Arts describes its intertwined themes as “love and war, joy and terror, and—ultimately, liberation and death.” That is the NEA’s characterization of the book, not Hemingway’s own wording. NEA Big Read overview; Penguin Random House description.
Is the novel based on a true story?
Hemingway’s life provides important background, but the novel should not be read as a literal memoir. He drove an ambulance for the Italian army during World War I, was severely wounded, recuperated in a Red Cross hospital in Milan, and fell in love with one of his nurses. The NEA and the U.S. National Archives connect those experiences to the novel’s origins and to the relationship between Frederic and Catherine.

That biographical connection identifies a model and source of material; it does not establish that the fictional characters or events correspond exactly to real people and incidents. The National Archives discusses the book as a retrospective of Frederic Henry’s war experience and doomed love affair. NEA Big Read; U.S. National Archives, “Hemingway on War and Its Aftermath”.
When was it published, and how did it fare?
A Farewell to Arms was first published in 1929. Simon & Schuster identifies the novel’s copyright as 1929 and reports that it sold 45,000 copies in fewer than three months after publication and appeared on many bestseller lists. That figure is the publisher’s historical claim; the publisher page does not separately state the year in which the claim was made. Simon & Schuster edition page, ISBN 9780684801469.

Which edition should you read?
For a straightforward first reading, choose a standard edition of the novel in the format you prefer. Simon & Schuster lists paperback, hardcover, ebook, unabridged audio download, and compact-disc formats. The publisher’s pages confirm format availability at the edition level, but do not establish current retailer stock or prices.
Readers interested in how Hemingway shaped the book can choose the Hemingway Library Edition. Simon & Schuster describes it as including alternate endings, handwritten notes, and long passages crossed out, making it more useful for exploring the writing process than for simply reading the novel without editorial context. Hemingway Library Edition, ISBN 9780684837888.

What to keep in mind before reading
- The setting and central relationship place the book at the intersection of a war narrative and a love story.
- Hemingway’s service, wound, and relationship with a nurse inform the novel’s background, but the story remains fiction.
- Choose the Library Edition for its additional manuscript and editorial material; choose a standard edition if your priority is the novel itself.
