Sarah Harris died in 2022; in 2023, a Montgomery County jury convicted oral surgeon James Michael Ryan of second-degree depraved-heart murder, involuntary manslaughter and drug offenses. Ryan’s later petition for U.S. Supreme Court review was scheduled for a conference on October 9, 2026; the docket had not recorded a grant of review as of that date.
What is A Doctor to Die For about?
Lifetime describes the 2026 TV-14 movie as a story about Sarah Harris entering a dangerous relationship with middle-aged surgeon Dr. James Ryan, who secretly provides her with surgical-grade drugs. That is the network’s synopsis, not a verbatim account of judicial findings. The film is based on the documented case, but individual scenes and dialogue should be understood as dramatized unless independently supported by the public record.
TV Insider reported that executive producers Elisabeth Rohm and Kara Feifer collaborated with Harris’s family. Rohm said, “After getting to know the family we knew we had to tell this difficult story to protect other people in the future.” Feifer called the project “a cautionary tale” and “a tale about resilience”; those are the producers’ descriptions of their intentions, not court findings.
What happened to Sarah Harris?
The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said Harris, 25, had been Ryan’s patient before he recruited her as an employee at his oral surgery practice. The prosecutor’s office said Ryan supplied drugs taken from the practice and often administered them himself. A&E reports that the two later had a romantic relationship.

Harris was found dead on January 26, 2022, in the Clarksburg home she and Ryan rented. According to the State’s Attorney’s Office, the medical examiner determined that she died from intoxication involving ketamine, propofol and diazepam.
A&E reports that in February 2022, Harris’s sister Rachel gave police a compilation of about 200 pages of messages and other material. That reported account of the compilation is distinct from the prosecutor’s announcement about the drugs and Ryan’s conduct.

What did the jury decide?
On August 25, 2023, a Montgomery County jury found Ryan guilty of second-degree depraved-heart murder, involuntary manslaughter, possession with intent to distribute midazolam, and distribution of ketamine and diazepam. The State’s Attorney’s Office said the trial lasted two weeks and jurors deliberated for less than three hours.
The charge and verdict do not mean the jury had to find that Ryan intended Harris’s death. A&E quoted prosecutor Jennifer Harrison describing the prosecution’s burden this way: “We have to prove that he did it with reckless disregard for the value of her life.” That is Harrison’s summary of the prosecution theory, not a complete statement of Maryland law.

The State’s Attorney’s 2023 announcement said Ryan faced up to 55 years and that a sentencing hearing would be scheduled. A&E reported in 2026 that he was serving a 45-year sentence. The 45-year figure is attributed here to A&E; it was not stated in the prosecutor’s verdict announcement.
What happened after the conviction?
The Appellate Court of Maryland filed an opinion in Ryan v. State on September 3, 2025. The court marked the opinion unreported and said it may be cited only for persuasive value under Maryland Rule 1-104(a)(2)(B).

The U.S. Supreme Court docket for No. 26-5559 later listed Ryan’s petition for a writ of certiorari for the Court’s October 9, 2026 conference. A conference is not a hearing on the merits, and the docket did not show that the Court had granted review. The procedural status stated here reflects the docket as of that conference date.
