Spoilers for the television series finale. The series ends with Diana trying to save Matthew from Benjamin, while revelations from Ashmole 782—the Book of Life—bring the creatures’ hidden history into focus. The finale is Season 3, Episode 7, the final episode of the adaptation.

What happens in the finale?

The immediate crisis is Matthew’s survival. Benjamin has tortured him nearly to death, and Diana makes plans to rescue him. That is the central conflict confirmed by AMC+’s official synopsis; Sky likewise describes the episode as a final confrontation for Diana and Matthew.

At the same time, the Book of Life yields revelations about long-hidden secrets of the creatures. The two threads give the finale its broad shape: a personal struggle to save Matthew and a larger mystery about the world inhabited by witches, vampires and daemons.

What does the Book of Life revelation mean?

Ashmole 782 is the enchanted manuscript Diana called up in Oxford’s Bodleian Library, the event that sets the series’ creature-world conflict in motion. In the finale, its revelations illuminate secrets about the creatures. In that sense, the book is not only an object sought by characters; it is the key to understanding the mystery that has driven the series.

The official episode descriptions do not itemize every discovery or explain each revelation in detail. So the safest reading is the broad one: the Book of Life brings the creatures’ concealed history into focus, rather than assigning it a more precise meaning that the episode summaries do not establish.

Does the series end on a cliffhanger?

The episode is identified by Sky as the final one, and its description frames Diana and Matthew’s confrontation as final. AMC describes Season 3 as the show’s concluding installment, based on The Book of Life, the final novel in Deborah Harkness’s All Souls trilogy. Those facts support reading the episode as the close of the television adaptation’s central Diana-and-Matthew story, not as a setup for another season.

Discovery of Witches, A: Season 3
  • In the final season of A Discovery of Witches, Matthew and Diana return from their trip to 1590 to find tragedy has occurred at Sept-Tours. They must locate the missing pages from the Book of Life—and the Book itself—before it’s too late. But their enemies are gearing up against them, and a monster from Matthew’s past has been lying in wait to return for revenge.

That does not establish every character’s eventual fate or rule out every unanswered detail. The official synopses are brief and do not provide a complete account of the episode’s epilogue, so claims about specific futures or a scene-by-scene resolution should be checked against the episode itself.

How the finale relates to the books

The television series adapts Harkness’s All Souls trilogy, with its third and final season based on The Book of Life. The series finale is therefore the adaptation’s conclusion; it should not be treated as a substitute for every detail or emphasis in the novel’s ending. Viewers curious about the source story can read the book, but it is not required to understand the television finale.

The show’s executive producers, Jane Tranter and Lachlan MacKinnon, have described the story as a love story at heart and discussed the challenge of translating information novels can convey internally. That adaptation context helps explain the balance between the couple’s story and the mythology, but it is not a finale-specific explanation from the producers.
