The divide is less about whether the movie can hold attention than about what a Dylan film should reveal.
What period of Dylan’s life does the film cover?
A Complete Unknown is a period-focused biographical drama, not a cradle-to-grave account. The Associated Press describes its span as Dylan’s arrival in New York in 1961 through his rise toward the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Metacritic’s synopsis similarly places the story in the early-1960s New York folk scene and points to Dylan’s electric Newport performance as its culmination. What do critics most consistently praise?
Chalamet’s performance
Chalamet’s portrayal is one of the clearest points of agreement in the reviews covered here. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus and the Associated Press review both single out his performance as a strength. That praise does not mean every reviewer thinks the film fully explains Dylan; it means the central performance gives the film a compelling focus. The music and performance scenes
Music is not incidental to the movie’s identity. The Associated Press notes that Chalamet plays and sings Dylan’s material, while Metacritic’s review page highlights critical responses to the film’s many musical performances. For reviewers who value the film’s energy, those sequences help make the early folk-scene setting vivid. Associated Press review · Metacritic critic reviews

#1 Best Overall
- New York, 1961. A young Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, forging relationships with music icons on his meteoric rise which culminates in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Why are critics divided about the film’s portrait of Dylan?
Enigma can be part of the appeal
Dylan is presented as difficult to pin down, and some of the film’s appeal lies in spending time with a figure it does not claim to solve. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus allows that the movie may not get under Dylan’s skin, while still describing the experience of being in his company. That framing helps explain how a critic can find the performance engaging without believing the film offers a deep psychological account. Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus
Withholding insight can also frustrate
The same elusiveness can feel like a limitation. The Atlantic argues that the film’s conventional approach sits uneasily with Dylan’s unconventionality. Metacritic’s review excerpts also include an individual critic’s objection that the characterization remains opaque and that musical performances crowd the film. These are particular critical reservations, not a consensus shared by every reviewer. The Atlantic review · Metacritic critic reviews

So, are critics in tune?
Partly. There is a recognizable area of agreement around Chalamet and the musical element, but less agreement about the film’s storytelling choices and its success at conveying Dylan. The useful distinction is between performance and construction: a reviewer can admire the acting and songs while finding the biopic framework too familiar, or find the withholding of explanation evocative rather than illuminating. The reviews therefore support a qualified answer, not a claim that critics uniformly endorse or reject the film.
