Along the way, he earns a Hunter License, learns Nen, returns to Kite, and makes a devastating choice during the Chimera Ant crisis. This spoiler-forward timeline follows Gon through the major arcs of the manga continuity and distinguishes his confirmed milestones from what the latest chapter listings establish.
Before the Hunter Exam: Whale Island and Kite
Gon grows up on Whale Island in the care of his aunt Mito, believing himself to be an orphan. His course changes when he meets the Hunter Kite, who tells him that his father, Ging Freecss, is alive and is a renowned Hunter. Gon’s decision to become a Hunter and find Ging begins with that revelation. VIZ’s series recap describes his preparation for the Hunter Exam; a separate VIZ feature characterizes that preparation as three years of training, not an exact measure of the full span of his childhood. Hunter Exam: a license and new friends
On the journey to the exam, Gon meets Leorio and Kurapika and becomes close to Killua, a boy his age from the Zoldyck assassin family. The four form a bond through the exam’s endurance tests and other stages. In the final one-on-one phase, Gon forces Hanzo to admit defeat, then is knocked unconscious. He wakes to learn that Killua has gone home after disqualifying himself. Gon sets off with Leorio and Kurapika to bring him back. Gon passes the exam and becomes a licensed Hunter. VIZ’s series recap describes the exam as one that, on average, fewer than one in a hundred thousand pass; that is VIZ’s stated description, not a current independently measured pass rate. Zoldyck Family: bringing Killua back
Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika travel to the Zoldyck family estate to retrieve Killua. The detour is driven by Gon’s loyalty to a new friend, rather than by his search for Ging. VIZ’s series recap

Heavens Arena: learning Nen
Gon goes to Heavens Arena with Killua to grow stronger and eventually face Hisoka again. Wing teaches both boys Nen, the control of life energy, or aura. For Gon, learning Nen adds a way to pursue his goal and confront opponents whose strength ordinary training cannot match. VIZ describes Nen mastery as a skill Gon needs to be fully recognized as a Hunter. VIZ’s recap of the exam and training
Yorknew City: the Phantom Troupe and a clue to Ging
In Yorknew City, Gon and Killua become caught up in events surrounding the Phantom Troupe and a major auction. Gon wants to buy the rare, expensive Greed Island game because he hopes it may offer a clue to Ging’s whereabouts. The game is a possible next step in the search, not a direct reunion with his father. VIZ’s series recap
Greed Island: training, danger, and a return to Kite
Gon and Killua enter Greed Island, a dangerous game reserved for Hunters. Its objective is to collect 100 specified cards in a special binder. They train under Biscuit Krueger, discover how much stronger they need to become, and face the Bomber threat. After completing the game, Gon still has not found Ging: instead, the result brings him back to Kite, the Hunter who first told him his father was alive. VIZ’s Greed Island recap
Chimera Ant: Kite, NGL, and the cost of Gon’s choice
After Greed Island, Gon unexpectedly reunites with Kite and travels with him into NGL to investigate the Chimera Ants. As the threat grows, Gon joins Killua and other Hunters in the conflict. The Ants are a dangerous emerging species, and some retain human memories and feelings. VIZ’s Chimera Ant recap

Hunter Association election: rescue and recovery
After Chairman Netero dies and the Chimera Ant crisis ends, the Hunter Association begins choosing a new chairman. Gon is unconscious and in critical condition after his fight with Neferpitou. Meeting Ging: the search reaches its goal
After recovering, Gon meets Ging at the World Tree. The meeting fulfils the goal set in motion when Kite revealed that Ging was alive, but it does not end the series. The publisher’s recaps establish the father-search as a central thread in Gon’s story; they do not provide a scene-by-scene account of the meeting. VIZ’s series recap

VIZ’s chapter index listed chapter 420 as free on September 6, 2026. The index is a release list, not a plot synopsis, so it does not establish whether Gon appears in that chapter or what he is doing at that point. The verified chronology here follows the manga’s major arc sequence; it does not assign exact in-universe dates or a precise age progression.
