It begins with a practical problem, a flooded home, and turns into a reckoning with a woman the narrator thought she knew. The discovery at its centre is a copy of Taslima Nasrin’s Nirbachita Column on her late grandmother’s shelf. This is a first-person literary essay, not a documentary or independent reporting, so what follows separates what the narrator observed from what she infers.
How the essay begins
The essay opens after a cloudburst floods the narrator’s home. Moving belongings into her late grandmother’s room, she looks over the shelves and objects that have stayed there. Among books by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and Rabindranath Tagore sits Nasrin’s Nirbachita Column. Roy’s account of the moment is quiet and specific, and it sets up the essay’s main move: a small, physical object prompts her to reconsider the inner life of someone she knew mainly through domestic routines.
What the narrator actually observed
The essay separates two kinds of evidence, and it helps to keep them apart when reading.
- The object: a copy of Nirbachita Column on the shelf, placed between works by Chattopadhyay and Tagore.
- The signs of use: a worn cover, a softened spine, dog-eared pages, and underlined passages.
- The inference: that her grandmother read the book closely and that the marked passages mattered to her.
- The interpretation: that the book reveals a “hidden rebellion,” and that the grandmother accommodated the narrator’s own small rebellions with quiet tolerance.
The first two items are what Roy saw. The last two are her reading of the evidence, shaped by memories of humour, affection and everyday compromise in the household. The essay presents them as an act of remembrance, not as proof of what her grandmother believed. A reader who takes the title’s word “rebellion” as established biography is going beyond the text.

The Nasrin passages in the essay
Roy prints Bengali passages attributed to Nasrin alongside English renderings. The essay does not name a translator or cite the edition the passages come from, so the English wording should be attributed to the essay rather than to a verified published translation. Two passages do most of the work.
The first is the sentence the essay gives as: “Women who write are often assumed, in ordinary life, to be experiencing some great upheaval as they write.” The second, in the same translation, reads: “If a woman has not fallen in love or failed in love, if she has not experienced dissatisfaction in marriage or detachment from domestic life, many cannot understand why she would write literature at all.”

Both lines speak to a common assumption: that a woman’s writing must be the product of personal crisis, and that without one it is hard to see why she would write at all. Roy uses them to think about why her grandmother might have found a companion in such a book, not to claim that the grandmother had lived through any of these experiences.
The Veena Das sentence
The essay also reproduces a sentence attributed to the anthropologist Veena Das: “The everyday world for women is constructed by forces that regulate what is permissible to experience, what must remain silent, and what can be inherited across generations.” The essay does not give an original publication reference for it. If you want to quote it as a checked Das passage, find the source yourself first. Within the essay, the line supports the argument that silence and inheritance are part of a woman’s domestic life, and that what passes down through a family can include questions as well as objects.

How the essay frames inheritance
Roy’s central claim is that a family inheritance can contain unspoken questions and private reading, not only recipes, rituals and household objects. The book on the shelf becomes a way into that claim. Her closing line makes the frame explicit: “Through the books we leave behind, through the silences and the rebellions that seep through, love does find a place.” That line is the essay’s own framing and should be attributed to Roy.
What the essay does not establish
- It does not establish the grandmother’s beliefs, her reading habits beyond this copy, or how she understood the book.
- It contains no statistic about women, reading or writing that could be cited as a finding.
- It does not identify the publisher, edition or ISBN of the copy Roy found. The essay names the book only as Nirbachita Column.

Readers who want the book itself should look for a Bengali-language edition of Nirbachita Column through a bookseller they trust, and check that the edition matches the one described. Do not assume the copy in the essay is any particular current release.

Why this essay is worth reading
The essay is short, and its strength lies in how little it asks the reader to accept on the narrator’s word. A worn book, a line underlined in pencil or ink, a shelf between two famous names: these are the details that make a private reading life visible without overstating it. For readers interested in memoir about women’s inner lives, or in how younger family members reconstruct those lives after a death, it offers a clear example of interpretation kept honest about its limits.
Roy’s own phrase, “a companion in quiet corners of life,” names what she finds in the book and in the grandmother who kept it. The essay asks readers to notice those quiet corners in their own families, and to treat what they find there as a question rather than a conclusion.
