A$AP Rocky, whose legal name is Rakim Mayers, told the judge on February 11, 2025, that he would not testify in his felony assault trial. The defense rested without calling him. On February 18, the jury acquitted him of both counts.
What Rocky said in court
On February 11, Judge Mark Arnold asked Mayers whether he had discussed his decision with his lawyers. According to the Associated Press account, Mayers replied, “Absolutely, your honor,” and then said, “I want my right to not testify.” The defense rested that day without calling him to the stand. What the charges involved
The trial concerned two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, arising from a 2021 Hollywood altercation with Terell Ephron, known as A$AP Relli. The weapon’s nature was disputed. The defense’s anticipated account, as described by AP, was that it was a starter pistol that fired blanks and was carried for security; that was the defense position, not an established court finding.
Why a defendant may choose not to testify
Testifying can give a defendant a chance to address the evidence directly, but it also exposes the person to cross-examination. AP described testifying as a gamble in criminal cases. The reporting does not establish Mayers’s private reasoning, so his choice should not be attributed to a specific motive. When a defendant does not testify, jurors assess the evidence presented by both sides rather than hearing that defendant’s testimony.

The reported stakes—and the verdict
Before the verdict, AP reported that Mayers faced up to 24 years in prison if convicted and had turned down a pretrial plea deal that could have led to 180 days in jail. Those were potential stakes reported during the case, not the outcome. After a three-week trial, the jury acquitted him of both felony counts on February 18, 2025. The acquittal resolved the charges against Mayers; it does not, by itself, establish which account of the 2021 altercation was true.
