You can visit Connecticut towns that helped inspire Gilmore Girls—but not the real Stars Hollow. Stars Hollow is fictional, and no episode was filmed in Connecticut, according to Connecticut Public. This three-day, car-based route connects New Milford, Washington Depot and Litchfield for their town greens, cafés, bookshops and Litchfield Hills scenery.
Day 1: New Milford’s green and downtown
Begin at the New Milford town green, where a bandstand offers a familiar small-town focal point. Locals call it a bandstand, not a gazebo; the resemblance is part of the appeal, not evidence that the show was filmed there. New Milford is one of the Connecticut stops fans visit for its atmosphere and echoes of Stars Hollow.
From the green, explore downtown at an unhurried pace. Stop at Honeybee Books & Tea and Theo’s diner, and add the Village Center for the Arts if it fits your plans. Downtown antiquing is another option. These stops make a manageable first day without treating any one of them as a set or confirmed filming location.
Day 2: Washington Depot and New Preston
Washington Depot is a key inspiration for the show’s small-town setting. Browse the Hickory Stick Bookshop and visit The Po Café; Marty’s Café and The Pantry are other named local stops. Check each business’s current information before setting out, since reliable current hours are not established here.

Know the Mayflower Inn’s access rules
The Mayflower Inn & Spa is part of the inspiration story, but it is private property, not a casual walk-in attraction. Connecticut Public reports access is limited to paying guests and people with dinner reservations. Do not arrive expecting to tour the grounds without an eligible reservation or stay.
Add a trail or New Preston
Nearby Steep Rock Association preserves offer hiking trails. Check current trail conditions and access before you go. If time allows, continue to New Preston for its shops and waterfall. The regional visitor guide groups New Preston and Washington Depot in the same town area and describes local shops and attractions: Litchfield Hills.

Day 3: Litchfield, or an optional Hartford extension
Spend the day in Litchfield village, browsing downtown shops and stopping at The Village Restaurant, both included among tourism-recommended options. For a slower day, stay in Litchfield County: the region is known for quiet villages and traditional greens, and the July 2025 regional guide describes a fall drive on Route 7 beside the Housatonic River.
Optional: connect the story to Hartford
If you want to add a creator-history stop, consider the Mark Twain House in Hartford. Connecticut Public reports that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino visited the house and that the trip became part of the story behind Gilmore Girls. Hartford is an optional extension, not a filming location; allow for the additional drive rather than trying to squeeze it into a relaxed Litchfield day.
Plan the drive, season and visits
- Use a car and group stops by town. The destinations are spread across several communities. Connecticut Public advises saving map directions before heading out because cellphone service can be limited in the area.
- Consider autumn, but check conditions. Fall foliage and the small-town atmosphere make the season an appealing fit. The regional guide highlights Route 7 foliage drives, while Connecticut Public describes fall as a popular time for the Gilmore Girls feel. Foliage timing varies, so check close to your travel dates.
- Verify hours and access directly. Current opening hours for the cafés, shops, trails and museum are not established here. Check each venue’s own current information, and make reservations where required.
- Keep navigation practical. Save directions offline or carry a paper map; a New England road atlas is optional, not a requirement.
What this trip can—and cannot—show you
The Connecticut stops offer real-world inspiration: greens, independent shops, cafés and country scenery associated with the show’s setting. They are not a substitute for a Stars Hollow set visit. Connecticut tourism interest is real: Connecticut Public reported that Gilmore Girls-specific content had 143% more readers per day from September 15 to November 15 of the prior year than its daily average across the full year, citing the Connecticut Office of Tourism. That figure measures readership, not visitor numbers.
For a separate fan event, Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood announced Gilmore Girls Holidays for December 12, 2026–January 3, 2027, on its California backlot, including a Stars Hollow experience: Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood. It is in California, not New England, so it is not part of this Connecticut itinerary.
