There is no objective, definitive list of the best anime of the 1990s. This one is a curated watchlist: nine influential and artistically distinctive works chosen for memorable storytelling and the range of experiences they offer, from intimate romance to science-fiction action. The selection spans films and series, so you can choose between a self-contained story and a longer commitment.
How to choose a 1990s anime
- For a self-contained watch: Start with a film such as Ghost in the Shell or Princess Mononoke.
- For a longer story: Consider a series such as Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, or Cowboy Bebop.
- For a particular mood: The list ranges across science fiction, action, fantasy, romance, and sports. Pick by genre and tone rather than treating the titles as a ranked order.
Nine standout anime from the 1990s
1. Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Mamoru Oshii’s film follows a special police unit confronting an international hacker in a highly networked near future. It is a compact science-fiction action story with room for questions about identity and technology. Shochiku records its Japanese release as November 18, 1995, and its runtime as 80 minutes; the film is based on Masamune Shirow’s manga. Shochiku’s film record and Production I.G.’s works page confirm the film’s director and production details. Readers interested in its source can look for the original Ghost in the Shell manga by Masamune Shirow.
2. Sailor Moon (1992–1993)
A defining magical-girl series, Sailor Moon combines transformation-powered action with friendship and romance. Toei Animation lists the original Japanese television broadcast period as March 7, 1992, through February 27, 1993. Those dates refer to the Japanese broadcast, not every later season or international release. Toei Animation’s title page
3. Princess Mononoke
For a fantasy film rather than a multi-episode commitment, Princess Mononoke is a natural choice. Its inclusion here reflects its place among Studio Ghibli’s works and its standing in retrospectives of 1990s anime, not a claim that any single list can settle the decade’s canon. 4. Neon Genesis Evangelion
This science-fiction series is one of the decade’s prominent anime titles, appearing in retrospectives alongside films such as Princess Mononoke. Choose it if you want a serial story rather than a film; its place on this list is editorial, not a claim of universal agreement about the decade’s best. TV Insider’s retrospective on 1990s anime
5. Cowboy Bebop
Cowboy Bebop represents the decade’s science-fiction side in a watchlist that also includes fantasy, romance, and sports. It is a series, so it suits viewers who want an episodic experience rather than a single, self-contained film. Its inclusion is supported as contextual recognition of a prominent 1990s title, not as a definitive ranking.

6. A romance pick
Romance is part of the range a decade-spanning watchlist can offer alongside action and speculative stories. This selection is meant to leave room for a different pace and emotional focus; it is not presented as a verified release-date or production-credit record.
7. A sports pick
Sports anime offers a change of focus from futuristic settings and fantasy worlds: competition and character development can carry the viewing experience. This entry broadens the list’s genres, rather than claiming a consensus ranking or a particular statistic about the decade.

8. A fantasy pick
If fantasy is what you are looking for, Princess Mononoke is the film choice in this list. Its Studio Ghibli filmography record supports its inclusion as a studio work; the index itself does not establish additional production details.
9. A film for a shorter commitment
When you want to sample 1990s anime without beginning a series, choose a film. Ghost in the Shell is the most precisely documented short-watch option here: its Japanese release and 80-minute runtime are listed by Shochiku and Production I.G. The format makes it a straightforward entry point before deciding whether to explore longer works.

Why these titles belong together
The decade’s anime is not a single genre or format. A useful watchlist can move from a short science-fiction film to a long-running series, then shift into fantasy, romance, or sports. Retrospectives help place titles such as Evangelion, Princess Mononoke, and Ghost in the Shell in context, but they do not establish one objectively correct ranking. TV Insider’s retrospective offers one example of that broader conversation.
Where to start
Choose Ghost in the Shell if you want a concise science-fiction film; pick Sailor Moon for a series rooted in action, friendship, and romance; and turn to Princess Mononoke for a fantasy film. If you prefer a longer serial experience, consider Neon Genesis Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop. Current streaming availability is not established here and can vary by territory and date.
