The available result confirms the headline “9 incredible games that are now abandonware, and cost nothing to play,” but it does not identify the nine games. That means there is no verified list here—and no basis for claiming that any particular game is abandoned, free, or legally downloadable today.
What is actually known about the nine games?
A search-result mirror of an XDA Developers social post provides the headline, but not the article’s titles. The XDA page could not be opened, and a follow-up search did not find the missing list. Without the names, it is not possible to check the games’ publishers, current availability, platforms, or legitimate access options.
So the headline’s claim that the games “cost nothing to play” cannot be verified title by title from the available information. It should not be treated as a list of free downloads.
Does “abandonware” mean a game is free to download?
No. “Abandonware” is an informal label, not proof that a game’s copyright has expired or that its owner has authorized copying or distribution. A 2012 PC gaming history blog calls the concept a “real legal grey area”; that is the author’s commentary, not a legal ruling. The U.S. Copyright Office overview available here does not establish a rule that makes an unavailable or unsupported game free to copy.
Whether a specific download is authorized depends on the particular game and the rights holder’s permissions or other applicable legal basis. The sources available for this headline do not determine that status for any of the nine titles.

Once the titles are known, check each one individually before downloading or recommending it:

- Confirm the exact title and edition. A sequel, remaster, regional release, or fan-made version may have different rights and availability.
- Look for an official source. Check the publisher or rights holder’s current site and authorized storefront listings for a free release, sale, or purchase option.
- Check the terms of any free offer. Confirm whether the game itself is free, whether the offer is limited, and whether the download is distributed by an authorized source.
- Verify platform compatibility. Establish which operating systems or consoles are supported and whether an official edition or compatibility solution is required.
For this headline, the missing game names prevent those checks. No title-specific access route, price, platform, or permission can be responsibly supplied.
