In 9-1-1 Season 5, Episode 16, “May Day,” Bobby Nash runs into a burning call center to reach his stepdaughter May and shields her when the roof collapses. Peter Krause, who plays Bobby, told TV Insider that the rescue grows out of Bobby’s deep love for May and her brother Harry. The episode also plants a mystery around temporary partner Jonah: Krause teased Bobby’s regret, but the answer comes in the following episode, “Hero Complex.”
What happens in “May Day”
Spoilers for Season 5, Episodes 16 and 17. A fire breaks out at the call center where May works as a dispatcher. Bobby rushes inside, finds her, and covers her as the roof comes down. The 118—including Eddie—then works to pull Bobby and May from the rubble.
The rescue leaves Bobby’s condition uncertain. The episode ends with concern about a possible pinched nerve in his leg, while Hen is unsettled by Jonah’s detached response to a dispatcher he failed to save.
Why Bobby risks himself for May
In her May 2, 2022, TV Insider interview, Meredith Jacobs asked Krause about Bobby’s response to the fire. Krause described Bobby as seeing May and her brother Harry as his own children, even as he respects Athena and Michael as their parents. “I think there’s a really deep love and caregiving aspect to Bobby when it comes to those kids,” he said.

That bond gives the rescue its emotional force: Bobby is not treating May as just another person to reach in an emergency. Krause connected his instinct to protect her with Bobby’s past losses and his strong sense of responsibility.
What Krause said about the 118
Krause placed the rescue within the show’s larger idea of first responders as ordinary people doing extraordinary work. He called 9-1-1 “a comic book about first responders come to life” and said, “these are supposed to be everyday heroes.”
Rank #2
He also praised the ensemble’s willingness to let the team matter more than any one character, saying they “are more interesting and we have greater strength as a team than as individuals.” That idea is visible in the rescue itself: Bobby gets to May, but the 118 has to get both of them out.
What is up with Jonah?
At the end of “May Day,” Hen is suspicious of Jonah because he talks about a failed rescue as though it were a calculation, rather than a human loss. Krause’s interview, published before the season finale, does not explain Jonah’s motives. He only says Bobby “is going to, as we’ve seen before, beat himself up a little bit when he makes mistakes” and that Bobby “feels really bad about some things surrounding Jonah that will be revealed very soon.”

No. Asked about the consequences of the rescue, Krause declined to disclose Bobby’s condition. He joked that “over time, you as a viewer know this, the members of the 118 are rather indestructible.” That was a playful teaser, not a medical update or a promise about the outcome.
