“War,” the January 15, 2026 episode of 9-1-1, feels closer to the show’s familiar blend of outsized emergencies and character conflict because Athena refuses to let the team’s personal crisis drift. Her intervention gives the hour a center. It does not make every strand work: the Hen-Chimney resolution can feel too tidy, and the AI call-center plot struggles to make its emotional point cleanly.
What happens in “War”
Season 9, episode 8 takes its official setup from the fallout of Hen’s firing and the complications caused by a new AI call-center assistant, according to ABC’s episode catalog. The episode’s character drama gives those threads a more personal frame: Athena confronts Chimney over his response to Hen, and a team intervention forces the disagreement into the open. Maddie encounters the AI system’s limits, while Eddie’s emergency call connects to his military experience, as described in episode reviews.
That mix is the source of the hour’s return-to-form feeling. The procedural emergencies are not detached set pieces; they sit alongside the characters’ unresolved tensions. Athena’s directness, in particular, turns the team conflict into something the ensemble has to face rather than a background complication.
Why Athena gives the episode its center
Athena works here less as a simple referee than as the person willing to name what the others are avoiding. Her confrontation with Chimney supplies momentum to an episode whose central conflict could otherwise remain diffuse. Absolute Geeks sees her as the anchor of the hour, praising the way her authority connects the procedural’s action to the characters’ wounds. Fangirlish, while more qualified in its overall assessment, also credits the episode with addressing consequences that had been left hanging.

#1 Best Overall
That is a persuasive argument for the episode’s familiar 9-1-1 appeal: the emergency plot and the personal plot can reinforce one another. But Athena’s effectiveness does not automatically make the intervention fair or the resulting reconciliation convincing. The episode gets its characters talking; whether it gives each of them enough room to be heard is a separate question.
Does Hen and Chimney’s conflict resolve convincingly?
This is where the critical response diverges most sharply. Absolute Geeks praises the character-focused turn but argues that the Hen-Chimney resolution comes too easily and gives too little weight to Hen’s accountability. Fangirlish values the follow-through on the consequences of Hen’s secrets, yet remains uneasy about the earlier choices that created the storyline. But Why Tho? objects to the intervention’s characterization and sees missed opportunities to carry the team’s grief and continuity into the scene.
The disagreement matters because the episode’s intervention is doing more than clearing the air: it is meant to make a damaged team feel like an ensemble again. Athena provides a credible push toward that conversation, but the hour’s quick movement toward resolution may leave viewers wanting a more balanced reckoning. A conflict can be addressed without every consequence feeling fully worked through.

Does the AI call-center story land?
The AI assistant gives “War” a contemporary procedural problem, but its dramatic purpose is less settled. The official synopsis says the new system causes complications; reviews disagree about whether the episode makes those complications emotionally coherent. Absolute Geeks reads the emergency plots as a way to connect calls to character wounds. But Why Tho? criticizes the AI storyline’s emotional framing, while Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displays conflicting excerpts among the three critic reviews it lists.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe limitation is not that a rescue drama cannot use technology as a source of danger. It is that the episode needs to make the human stakes legible rather than letting the system itself stand in for an argument. Viewers who find the AI thread muddled may still respond to the character work around it; those who enjoy the show’s heightened emergencies may find it fits the hour’s broad procedural style. The available critical sample is too small and divided to establish a consensus.
Eddie’s call offers a smaller character beat
Eddie’s rescue storyline is another attempt to link emergency work with personal history. But Why Tho? calls it the episode’s strongest element, even while criticizing other parts of the hour. That review also takes issue with how the story handles the character, so the strand is not beyond dispute. Its value is more modest: it gives the episode another way to connect the call-of-the-week format to the people responding.

How critics differ on the episode
The three available positions are better read as distinct responses than as a verdict on behalf of viewers. Absolute Geeks gives “War” 4 out of 5, praising Athena’s role and the return to character-driven storytelling while faulting the ease of the Hen-Chimney resolution. Fangirlish emphasizes improved continuity and forward movement but questions the choices behind Hen’s storyline. But Why Tho? rates the episode 3 out of 10, objecting to the intervention and AI plot while singling out Eddie’s rescue as its best part. Rotten Tomatoes lists three critic reviews on the episode page; that count is not audience data and is too limited to represent a broad critical consensus.
For viewers who want the ensemble’s personal conflicts to matter as much as the emergencies, Athena’s intervention makes “War” feel like a course correction. For those who need the consequences to be more evenly examined—or the AI story’s emotional argument to be clearer—the episode’s return to the show’s familiar rhythm is real but incomplete.
