Ortiz refuses to set aside her anger over her son Kyle’s death, turning the appeal into a tense confrontation. The episode originally aired on ABC on October 17, 2024.
What happens in the preview
Hen, played by Aisha Hinds, shows Ortiz, played by Verónica Falcón, a video of Mara, who is staying with Maddie and Chimney. Hen asks Ortiz not to make Mara pay for their conflict: “Please don’t punish her because you can’t forgive me.” She adds, “Mara needs her family back. We’re all she has.”
Ortiz answers with her own loss: “Kyle was all I had.” She then tells Hen, “Maybe young Mara will have to learn to do the same.”
Why Hen and Ortiz are at odds
As Patrick Gomez’s October 17, 2024 preview for Entertainment Weekly, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, describes the story, Hen and Karen lost their foster license at the end of season 7 and relinquished guardianship of Mara. Ortiz blames Hen for Kyle’s death; Kyle died in season 7 after injuries from drunk driving. Mara is with Maddie and Chimney while the adults’ dispute leaves her future uncertain.

The same article reports that co-creator Tim Minear described Ortiz as “Cruella” and said, “She’s running for mayor.” Minear also characterized the Wilson and Buckley-Han households as an extended family beyond the fire station, saying, “I put Maddie more into Hen’s world and Hen into Maddie’s world.” In this confrontation, that connection is practical as well as emotional: Maddie and Chimney are caring for Mara while Hen tries to bring her home.
