“The Last Alarm” makes Bobby’s death feel more final by showing what his sacrifice leaves behind: Athena trying to face a life without her husband, Chimney carrying guilt over the dose that saved him, and the 118 gathering to bury its captain. Its performances give the loss weight, but an unrelated old case takes up time the grieving team might have used to mourn together.
How the episode turns Bobby’s death into an aftermath story
“The Last Alarm” is Season 8, Episode 16, which aired May 1, 2025. The episode begins two weeks after the events at the lab and Bobby’s death. Rather than suggesting a reversal, it focuses on how the people closest to him absorb the loss. Flashbacks and Athena’s visions bring Bobby into the hour, but as part of her grieving, not as a resurrection tease.
That choice makes his absence more tangible. Bobby remains present in memory and in the unfinished conversations Athena is trying to avoid, while the funeral moves the story toward a life in which he is no longer there.

Athena’s grief takes shape through an unfinished conversation
Athena tries to avoid making funeral arrangements, and the episode gives her visions of Bobby as she struggles with the loss. These moments connect the hour’s public rituals—the funeral and decisions about his burial—to the private work of accepting that he is gone.
The case Athena takes on echoes that grief. A mother believes another woman took her baby during a fire eight years earlier, after the child was presumed dead. Athena investigates and ultimately tells her that the theory is wrong. Helping the mother confront the truth gives Athena a way to engage with another person’s pain, but the procedural story also pulls attention away from the 118’s mourning.

Why Chimney’s guilt deepens the loss
Chimney’s sorrow has a specific source: Bobby gave him the only dose of antiviral, even though Bobby knew he was infected. Chimney is left alive with the knowledge that Bobby made that choice for him. His grief therefore includes survivor’s guilt, not only the shock of losing a friend and colleague.
Buck tries to help Chimney face his anger and guilt. The emotional stakes are sharpened by Bobby’s promise to protect Chimney’s family. In a TV Insider interview, showrunner Tim Minear explained the promise this way: “So when he says, ‘I promise I will not let anything bad happen to your family,’ he already knows what’s coming.”

The 118’s farewell—and the space it leaves out
The team gathers to bury Bobby, and Eddie returns from El Paso for the funeral. Hen’s sorrow and Buck’s efforts to support the others widen the loss beyond Athena and Chimney: Bobby was also the captain around whom the firehouse family had organized itself. Athena ultimately buries him with the family he lost in a fire in 2014, giving him a resting place tied to the people he had already mourned.
The farewell is affecting, but the episode’s allocation of time is uneven. TV Insider praised Angela Bassett and Kenneth Choi while criticizing the pacing and the limited attention given to Eddie, whose brief scenes leave little room to process his loss. The old child-death case similarly gives Athena a parallel grief story, but its resolution competes with time for the 118 to grieve Bobby together.

Does the episode provide closure?
It provides a funeral and a burial decision, and it treats Bobby’s death as final. It does not settle every question at the firehouse: Gerrard is leading the 118 temporarily, while the permanent captain decision remains open in contemporaneous coverage.
Reception reflects the episode’s split between emotional force and structural frustration. Rotten Tomatoes listed a 57% Tomatometer based on seven reviews on its episode page. That is a snapshot of those critics’ reviews, not an audience rating or a permanent consensus; individual reactions range from praise for the sober grief story to criticism of its tonal shifts and pacing.
