These eight writers offer very different starting points: funny picture books, verse, beginner chapter books, audiobooks, and retellings drawn from folklore and Hindu epics. The list and titles below come from a 2015 Scroll.in feature, so use them as a discovery guide rather than a current ranking or guarantee that a particular edition is available.
How to choose a starting point
Begin with the kind of reading your child is ready for and the stories they already enjoy. Picture books and verse invite shared reading; beginner chapter books give early independent readers shorter narrative steps; graphic novels and epic retellings offer a visual route into older stories. The eight writers span those formats, but the 2015 feature does not give a consistent age guide for every author.
- For humor, lively characters, or playful language, look first at Natasha Sharma, Arundhati Venkatesh, or Asha Nehemiah.
- For roads, journeys, and everyday settings, consider Poile Sengupta’s examples.
- For folklore, mythic creatures, and epic stories, explore Anushka Ravishankar, Devdutt Pattanaik, or Samhita Arni.
- For a picture-book and audiobook connection, look at the work associated with Shobha Viswanath and Karadi Tales.
Eight Indian writers and where to begin
Natasha Sharma: poems, humor, and playful concepts
Sharma’s first book, Icky Yucky Mucky, was published by Zubaan in 2012 and uses poems about disgusting habits. Other titles named in the feature include Squiggle Takes a Walk – All About Punctuation, Rooster Raga, Anaya’s Thumb, What Should I Wear Today?, Kaka and Munni, and Bonkers. The feature reports that Bonkers received the 2014 SCBWI Crystal Kite Award for Asia and the Middle East. If your child likes wordplay, comic situations, or poems that make everyday subjects feel unexpected, Sharma is a natural place to start.
Poile Sengupta: roads, travel, and stories of movement
A teacher and playwright who also writes adult fiction, Sengupta is represented by The Way to My Friend’s House, The Story of the Road, How the Path Grew, and Waterflowers. Several of these titles connect with roads and travel, making her work worth exploring with a child drawn to journeys and the places people move through.

Arundhati Venkatesh: monsters and mischievous characters
Junior Kumbhakarna and Bookasura – The Adventures of Bala and the Book-eating Monster bring mythic creatures and playful characters into view. The feature also names Venkatesh’s Petu Pumpkin series. These are good leads for children who like comic adventure and unusual creatures.
Anushka Ravishankar: verse, folk tales, and series
Ravishankar’s work ranges across picture books, folk-tale retellings, verse, and chapter-book series. Titles to look for include Tiger on a Tree, the Zain and Ana series, Song of the Bookworm, the Moin and the Monster series, and Phiss Phuss Boom. In the 2015 interview, Ravishankar described her picture books as being for children between five and eight; treat that as her description at the time, not as current guidance for every edition.

Shobha Viswanath: picture books and audiobooks
Viswanath is an author and a driving figure behind Karadi Tales, which the feature describes as helping popularize audiobooks. It discusses Karadi Tales picture books and Viswanath’s view that stories by Indian authors can offer children a stronger connection of context. The feature does not identify a specific individual title by Viswanath, so Karadi Tales picture books and audio editions are the more useful starting point to investigate.
Devdutt Pattanaik: Hindu mythology for children and parents
Pattanaik’s children’s books include the Fun in Devlok series and Pashu. The feature says these books were intended to make mythology accessible to children and parents, including gods and animals from Hindu mythology. They may suit families looking for story-based introductions to those traditions.

Samhita Arni: retellings of the epics
Arni began a Mahabharata retelling as a child. The feature also highlights Sita’s Ramayana, a graphic novel published by Tara Books. Together, these examples point toward two different ways into epic retellings: a child’s retelling of the Mahabharata and a visual treatment of the Ramayana.
Asha Nehemiah: stories for early chapter-book readers
The feature names Granny’s Sari, Trouble with Magic, and Meddling Mooli. Nehemiah described Trouble with Magic and Meddling Mooli as chapter books for beginners aged seven or eight in the 2015 interview. That is dated guidance from the interview, not a verified current publisher age rating.

What the list can—and cannot—tell you
This is a broad introduction rather than a complete bibliography or a ranked selection. It reflects the range of children’s publishing visible in a 2015 feature: picture books, verse, beginner chapter books, folk and epic retellings, mythology, and audiobook work. The source’s comments about publishing visibility and market potential were opinions shared in interviews at that time, not current measurements of the industry.
The feature also records a 2015 conversation about moving beyond moralizing stories toward livelier, more varied children’s fiction. That context helps explain the range of books it highlighted, but it does not establish what is currently in print. Before choosing, check a bookseller or publisher catalog for the edition, format, age guidance, and availability in your region.
