These eight picks range from a gentle family comedy and a restrained 1950s Yeti story to found-footage horror, quiet drama and a disputed piece of purported footage. They are not all horror films—and they are not an objective ranking—but each offers a different way to encounter the legendary creature on screen.
How to choose a Bigfoot movie
Start with the mood you want. For a family-friendly story, try Harry and the Hendersons; for classic suspense, choose The Abominable Snowman. Exists and Willow Creek use found-footage conventions, but differ in how they reveal the creature and build tension. The remaining picks include a low-budget exploitation curiosity, a drama, a musical fantasy comedy and purported footage that belongs to Bigfoot’s screen history—not proof that Bigfoot exists.
Eight Bigfoot movies and screen appearances
1. Harry and the Hendersons (1987): family comedy
On their way home from a camping trip, a Seattle family hits a Sasquatch with their car. They take him home, then try to protect and help him. Rick Baker’s creature makeup gives Harry a distinctive presence, while the story treats him as a gentle being rather than a monster to defeat. This is the pick for viewers who want a warm, accessible introduction to Bigfoot fiction.
2. The Abominable Snowman (1957): restrained fantasy-horror
Also released as The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, this Hammer film stars Peter Cushing and Forrest Tucker. A botanical expedition crosses paths with a search for the Yeti, shifting the story toward a classic creature-feature question: what will the expedition discover, and at what cost? Director Val Guest’s selective glimpses of the creature make suspense—not constant monster visibility—the film’s central appeal.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Bigfoot (1970): exploitation-era curiosity
This low-budget feature is best approached as a slice of period B-movie energy, not as a polished classic. Bikers and sensational genre elements supply much of its appeal. Choose it if you enjoy rough-edged exploitation cinema and want to see a very different era of Sasquatch storytelling.
4. Exists (2014): found-footage horror
Directed by Eduardo Sánchez, one of The Blair Witch Project’s co-directors, Exists follows a group whose trip to a remote cabin becomes a Sasquatch encounter. It shares found-footage framing with Sánchez’s earlier horror work, but viewers do get glimpses of the creature. That visibility gives it a different flavor from a story built around an unseen threat.

5. Willow Creek (2013): slow-building found-footage dread
Bobcat Goldthwait’s film follows a Bigfoot believer and his skeptical girlfriend as they travel to the area associated with the Patterson-Gimlin filming. Rather than relying on constant creature appearances, it builds unease through atmosphere; a prolonged campsite sequence is a particular source of dread. Choose it for a more patient, tension-first take on Bigfoot horror.
6. Letters From the Big Man (2011): quiet drama
Lily Rabe plays a Forest Service employee who encounters Bigfoot. The film takes that premise in a more contemplative direction than conventional horror, using its cinematography and score to support a sympathetic portrayal. It is the clearest choice here for viewers interested in a drama about an encounter rather than a creature feature built around pursuit or fear.

7. Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006): musical fantasy comedy
This musical fantasy comedy includes a memorable Sasquatch sequence and song. The creature appears as part of a mushroom-induced hallucination, so the scene plays as comic surrealism rather than an attempt at Bigfoot suspense. It is a short, offbeat detour for viewers who want their Sasquatch with a musical-comedy sensibility.
8. The Patterson-Gimlin film (1967): purported footage
This short piece of footage, shot in Northern California, purports to show Bigfoot. Its disputed authenticity has not been established, so it should be treated as an influential part of Bigfoot lore and screen culture—not as evidence that proves the creature exists. It belongs on a watchlist for historical context, not as a fictional feature film.
