For a list focused on clearly curly hair—not loose waves or a vaguely permanent-like style—these eight characters stand out for their afros, coils, ringlets, and curls. This is an editorial selection, not an objective or consensus ranking; the choices reflect how distinct each hairstyle looks and how well it fits the character’s design.
How this list defines curly hair
Anime hair can be hard to sort into neat categories: curls, coils, afros, and stylized ringlets overlap, while looser waves can be mistaken for curls. This list uses a visual standard: each character has a clearly curled, coiled, ringleted, or afro-shaped style that reads as such in the design. It leaves out hair that appears only wavy. That is one editorial boundary, not a universal rule; Devin Morris used the phrase “waves and ‘natural perms’ did not make the cut” when explaining the selection for a May 16, 2026 Kaminari list of 15 characters (Kaminari).
The order below is a curated lineup, not a claim that one character is objectively better than another. The entries balance recognizable silhouettes, different curl forms, character-design contrasts, and variety across franchises and genders.
Eight curly-haired anime characters
1. Brook — One Piece
Brook’s large afro gives him one of the most immediately recognizable silhouettes in One Piece. It is more than a visual flourish: his hair is tied to a poignant moment of recognition with an old friend. The rounded mass of curls also sets him apart from the series’ many sharp, angular character designs.

2. Mami Tomoe — Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Mami’s golden drill curls frame her composed, elegant magical-girl design. Their tight spiral shape is unmistakable, and the formal, carefully arranged ringlets reinforce her polished appearance. She is a strong example of curls functioning as a defining part of a character’s visual identity rather than background detail.
3. Usopp — One Piece
Usopp brings a different texture from Brook: his dark hair is formed into close coils rather than a broad afro. The style helps make his outline recognizable, while his evolving courage gives the character a story arc beyond his comic and inventive side. Including two One Piece characters also shows how differently the series can use curled hair.

4. Tatsumaki — One Punch Man
Tatsumaki’s green curls give her a compact, energetic silhouette that suits her forceful personality. The hair’s volume and movement contrast with her small stature, making her presence feel larger than her frame. Her design stands out without relying on long ringlets or a formal hairstyle.
5. Celestia Ludenberg — Danganronpa
Celestia’s black drill curls are central to her theatrical gothic-lolita look. Their precise, dramatic shape makes the hairstyle as deliberate as the persona she presents. Among the entries with tightly formed ringlets, hers is the most overtly stylized and formal.

6. Elizabeth Midford — Black Butler
Elizabeth’s long blonde ringlets support her initially bubbly, carefully dressed presentation. That appearance creates a contrast with her swordsmanship, giving the curls a role in the gap between how she is first perceived and what she can do. The hairstyle is a clear, flowing variation on the tighter drill curls elsewhere in the list.
7. Carole Stanley — Carole & Tuesday
Carole’s natural coils bring a grounded texture and everyday feel to a lineup full of dramatic silhouettes. As a musician working toward a career, she offers a different kind of character design: her curls are part of a contemporary look rather than an ornate costume or supernatural persona.

8. Yasuhiro Hagakure — Danganronpa
Yasuhiro’s shaggy brown coils have a looser, messier volume than Celestia’s carefully shaped ringlets. As comic relief, he provides a relaxed counterpoint to her theatrical presentation—and a reminder that curly hair in anime can look unruly as well as polished.

The lineup moves from Brook’s unmistakable afro through close coils, tight drill curls, long ringlets, and shaggy curls. That range matters: treating every curled style as identical would miss much of what makes the characters visually distinct. Some hairstyles reinforce a formal or theatrical persona; others give a character an energetic, grounded, or comedic silhouette.
There is no single definitive answer to who the “best” curly-haired anime characters are. A separate list by Ricky Spears also includes Mami Tomoe and Elizabeth Midford, alongside alternatives such as Nui Harime, Saaya Yamabuki, and Biscuit Krueger (Ricky Spears). The overlap supports these characters as recognizable candidates, but neither list is a consensus poll or an official character guide.
