Some Latino families mark New Year’s Eve with grapes, lentils, symbolic clothing, or small rituals at home. These customs are not shared by everyone: practices vary by country, community, generation, and household. The examples below are documented mainly in Mexico, with additional accounts from public radio and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
What are the twelve-grape New Year’s tradition?
At midnight, eat one grape with each of the twelve chimes and make a wish or set an intention for the year ahead. Mexico’s Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural describes the grapes as a way to express wishes, while another Mexican government source says each grape can represent a wish or purpose. The custom has a connection to Spain, but accounts differ about its origins, so no single origin story is certain. Mexico’s agriculture ministry explains the ritual and its symbolism; a separate Mexican government page describes the twelve wishes.
What other New Year’s customs are documented?
The following practices are described in Mexican government and cultural sources. They are symbolic customs, not guarantees of what the next year will bring.
| Custom | What people do | Meaning associated with it | Where it is documented |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eat lentils | Have a small serving before or during the New Year’s meal; some accounts describe lentil soup around midnight or leaving lentils outside. | Abundance, prosperity, and economic well-being. | Mexico’s agriculture ministry describes the food and symbolism; the National Hispanic Cultural Center records additional Mexican practices. Agriculture ministry; National Hispanic Cultural Center. |
| Walk with a suitcase | Take a suitcase outside for a walk after midnight; another account describes running around the block with one. | A symbolic wish to travel in the coming year. | Described by Mexico’s ISSSTE and public radio. ISSSTE; public radio account. |
| Wear red or yellow underwear | Choose red or yellow underwear for the celebration. | In the ISSSTE account, red is associated with love and yellow with money. These are folk beliefs, not promised outcomes. | Mexico’s ISSSTE. ISSSTE’s account of New Year’s rituals. |
| Open the doors at midnight | Open the doors of the home as the year changes. | Let the old year leave and the new one enter. | Mexico’s ISSSTE. ISSSTE’s account of New Year’s rituals. |
| Put money in a shoe | Place a coin or bill under the right foot, in a shoe, during the grape ritual. | Seek money and work in the coming year. | Mexico’s ISSSTE. ISSSTE’s account of New Year’s rituals. |
| Clean the house before midnight | Deep-clean the home before the year turns. | Symbolically clear away bad energy and unused belongings. | Mexico’s ISSSTE. ISSSTE’s account of New Year’s rituals. |
Why aren’t these customs universal?
“Latino” includes people with different national, regional, and family traditions. The sources document particular practices, especially in Mexico, but do not establish how many people follow them or provide a country-by-country inventory. Treat them as customs some families observe, not a checklist every Latino household repeats.
