Looking back at October 2025, seven horror releases offered very different routes to a Halloween watch: a supernatural sequel, a dog’s-eye haunted house, wellness satire, couples in peril, killer coyotes and an alien-tinged astronaut story. This U.S.-focused selection combines films identified in a national-theatrical roundup with one additional title from the Associated Press release calendar. The final pick, Shelby Oaks, had a limited release, so it did not meet the roundup’s broad-access standard.
October 2025 horror releases at a glance

|---|---|---|
| Good Boy | Haunted house told from a dog’s perspective | October 3; IFC and Shudder release, with screenings at major theater chains |
| Shell | Wellness-company satire and horror comedy | October 3; limited theatrical release and digital availability the same day |
| Bone Lake | Two couples, a shared mansion and hidden pasts | October 3 in the national-theatrical roundup; October 4 in the AP calendar |
| Coyotes | Killer-animal comedy horror | October 3; limited release in major markets |
| The Astronaut | Alien-focused sci-fi horror | October 17; limited theatrical release and digital availability the same day |

Which October 2025 horror movie should you watch?
For a supernatural sequel: Black Phone 2
The follow-up to The Black Phone returned much of the original cast and began a nationwide theatrical run on October 17. It is the clearest pick if you wanted a recognizable franchise entry with broad U.S. theater access. One roundup placed it first in its own editorial ranking; that position is a publisher’s preference, not an objective consensus.

For an unusual haunted-house perspective: Good Boy
Good Boy approaches a haunted-house story from a dog’s point of view, a premise that makes it stand apart from the month’s more familiar human-centered threats. IFC and Shudder released it October 3, and the roundup reported screenings at major theater chains.
For satirical horror comedy: Shell
In Shell, an actress’s prospects change after she falls under the influence of a wellness-company CEO. The setup gives the horror-comedy pick a show-business and wellness-industry angle. Its October 3 release was limited theatrically, with digital availability the same day.

For a tense house-share setup: Bone Lake
Bone Lake puts two couples in a mansion, where concealed pasts alter the balance between them. Release dates differ across the cited calendars: the national-theatrical roundup gives October 3, while AP lists October 4. Treat the date as source- and market-dependent rather than assuming one universal opening day.
For killer-animal chaos: Coyotes
This comedy horror film pairs Justin Long and Kate Bosworth with a threat from killer coyotes in the Hollywood Hills. Its October 3 release was limited to major markets, making it less of a nationwide theatrical option than Black Phone 2.
Rank #2
For alien-focused sci-fi horror: The Astronaut
Kate Mara plays an astronaut who returns to Earth believing an alien followed her home. The film opened in limited theaters through Vertical on October 17, with digital availability on the same day.
For a limited-release mystery: Shelby Oaks
AP’s October 3 calendar included Shelby Oaks, about a woman searching for her long-lost sister. It broadens this list beyond the national-theatrical roundup, which excluded it because its release was considered too limited for broad access. Include it if you are open to seeking out a limited release rather than expecting a film to be widely available in theaters.
How the seven-film list was chosen
This is a retrospective of U.S. releases in October 2025, not a claim to a definitive ranking of the month’s horror. A national-theatrical roundup supplied six broadly accessible selections; the seventh, Shelby Oaks, comes from AP’s wider release calendar and is clearly identified as limited. That distinction matters: a calendar listing establishes a scheduled release, but does not by itself mean a film had broad national access. Release dates and access can also vary by market, as the differing dates for Bone Lake illustrate.

Streaming releases were another part of the 2025 Halloween season, but their historical premiere dates do not establish that a title remains available now. Tubi announced the exclusive October 17, 2025 premiere of R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead, a young-adult horror film inspired by a story from The Haunting Hour. Its story follows Sam as he tries to stop a harvest curse after his brother disappears and is forgotten. Tubi Chief Content Officer Adam Lewinson described it as “a playful blend of good fun, big scares with an element of adventure that taps into everything audiences love about Halloween and young-adult horror” in the company’s September 23, 2025 announcement.
Rank #4
Tubi’s Terror on Tubi announcement also listed Adopted 2 for October 10, 2025. A Shudder-branded U.S. October 2025 schedule reproduced on Letterboxd named V/H/S/Halloween, Other and Hell House LLC: Lineage among new programming, and listed an October 31 watch party featuring Halloween (1978) and Deadstream. These are season-specific programming references, not confirmation of present-day catalog availability. In Canada, Bell Media said 28 Years Later would be available on Crave starting October 3, 2025; that streaming detail is separate from the October theatrical slate.
