The seven best “new” Netflix shows highlighted for August 2024 were actually a mix of one new-to-Netflix mystery series and six acquired or library titles. The standout new arrival was A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder; the rest included AMC’s Interview With the Vampire, The Terror, A Discovery of Witches, and Preacher, Lifetime’s UnREAL, and the dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself.
Because the original list described a past U.S. Netflix catalog, the dates below are historical availability information—not a guarantee that every show remains on Netflix today.
First, a clarification about “new”
This list refers to shows that were newly available on Netflix in the United States during August 2024—not seven series that Netflix produced or premiered that month. Only A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder was the clear new-to-Netflix original-style launch in this group. The other six were acquired or library titles, including series from AMC and Lifetime.
The August 2024 selections were curated recommendations from TheWrap contributors, not a numerically ranked list. They cover very different viewing moods: YA mystery, gothic horror, historical survival, fantasy romance, reality-TV satire, comic-book action, and formally inventive dark comedy.

1. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
Best choice for: viewers who want an accessible mystery with a strong book-to-screen hook.
Emma Myers plays Pip Fitz-Amobi, a British teenager who starts investigating a schoolgirl’s murder after becoming dissatisfied with the official police explanation. The six-episode first season adapts Holly Jackson’s bestselling YA mystery and follows Pip as she reexamines the case, questions the people around it, and uncovers evidence that the accepted story may be incomplete.
This is fictional mystery drama—not a true-crime account—but it uses the familiar pleasures of a reopened case, suspicious classmates, buried secrets, and a determined amateur investigator. Its short first season makes it the easiest entry on this list to finish quickly.
If the adaptation leaves you wanting more, the book that inspired A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is the natural next step. Jackson’s original novel also begins a larger series, so readers can continue beyond the television season rather than simply revisit the same story.

2. Interview With the Vampire
Best choice for: viewers who want literary gothic horror, sensual atmosphere, and ambitious performances.
AMC’s adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1976 novel centers on Louis de Pointe du Lac, played by Jacob Anderson, and Lestat de Lioncourt, played by Sam Reid. Their relationship is presented through a framed interview with Daniel Molloy, allowing the series to move between recollection, confession, romance, power struggle, and supernatural horror.
The appeal is not just the vampire mythology. The series treats Rice’s material as literary drama, giving its characters room for obsession, resentment, desire, manipulation, and self-invention. Anderson and Reid anchor the show with performances that make Louis and Lestat’s bond feel both intimate and dangerous.

The Netflix availability covered by the August 2024 recommendation concerned the first season available through the relevant AMC programming arrangement. Season 2 was identified as available through AMC+, rather than Netflix, at that time. Streaming rights change by country and date, so check the current Netflix listing before assuming that every season is still included. For the source material, you can read Anne Rice’s original Interview with the Vampire novel; the book is an optional literary companion, not a prerequisite for understanding the series.
3. The Terror — Season 1
Best choice for: viewers who want slow-building dread, historical detail, and survival horror.
The August recommendation was specifically for Season 1 of AMC’s anthology series. Jared Harris leads a story inspired by the nineteenth-century Northwest Passage expedition, in which the crews of two ships become trapped in Arctic ice. As food, warmth, mobility, and hope disappear, the expedition is threatened by a mysterious creature or force.
The season works on several levels at once. It is an isolated survival story, a historical drama about an expedition pushed beyond its limits, and a supernatural horror series that turns the frozen landscape into an inescapable prison. Its tension comes as much from cold, hunger, hierarchy, and deteriorating morale as from the creature outside the ships.
Do not approach this as one continuous anthology narrative. The Terror changes its setting and story from season to season; the Netflix availability discussed here concerned Season 1, not the anthology as a whole.

Best choice for: viewers who prefer fantasy romance and a complete multi-season adaptation.
Teresa Palmer plays Diana Bishop, a reluctant witch and historian who discovers an ancient manuscript. That discovery draws her into conflict with supernatural factions and into a relationship with Matthew Clairmont, a vampire played by Matthew Goode. The story expands across different periods and locations as Diana and Matthew attempt to understand the manuscript, their enemies, and the rules governing their world.

Unlike the single-season recommendations on this list, this package included all three seasons. That makes it a useful choice for viewers who want a longer story with a defined arc rather than a short sampler. Its tone sits closer to supernatural fantasy romance than outright horror, although it includes political conflict, danger, and darker mythology.
The television series adapts Deborah Harkness’s books. Viewers who want to compare the screen version with its source can explore the A Discovery of Witches novels, beginning with Harkness’s first novel. The books are a follow-up option for adaptation-minded readers, not something needed to follow the show.
5. UnREAL
Best choice for: viewers interested in reality-TV production, ethical compromise, and constructed authenticity.
UnREAL is a scripted Lifetime drama set behind the scenes of a reality dating show. Shiri Appleby plays a producer who returns to the program after a breakdown and is pushed to manipulate contestants, manufacture conflict, and shape relationships into compelling television.
The central question is not whether reality television is “real” in a simple sense. It is how producers, contestants, editors, and audiences participate in creating a version of reality that can be packaged and sold. The show uses the dating-show setting to examine ambition, emotional exploitation, ratings pressure, and the personal cost of turning private pain into entertainment.
All four seasons were included in the August 2024 Netflix package. This is not a documentary or an unscripted program; it is a drama about the machinery and psychology behind unscripted television. It is also the list’s sharpest change of pace from supernatural and historical storytelling.
6. Preacher
Best choice for: viewers who want dark comedy, supernatural mythology, and unapologetically violent comic-book action.

Dominic Cooper stars as Jesse Custer, a Texas preacher who acquires a supernatural power that allows him to command people. He sets out on a road-story journey that mixes religious imagery, occult mythology, brutal action, strange humor, and increasingly wild encounters.
AMC’s four-season adaptation is based on the comic created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Its appeal is its collision of tones: it can be grotesque, funny, violent, blasphemous, and sincere within the same broad story. It is a particularly good match for viewers who like genre shows that refuse to settle into one category.
Because comic editions vary by publisher, format, and retailer, readers who want the source material should look for the Preacher comic collection or collected editions of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s series. The television adaptation is not a Netflix original, and the August 2024 recommendation covered all four seasons that were added in that library batch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →7. Kevin Can F**k Himself
Best choice for: viewers who want a formally inventive dark comedy about domestic power and sitcom conventions.
Annie Murphy plays Allison, a woman trapped in a miserable marriage to Kevin, played by Eric Petersen. The series tells Allison’s story through two contrasting visual modes. When she is with Kevin, the show adopts the bright, multi-camera look and laugh-track rhythm of a conventional sitcom. When she is alone, it shifts into a darker single-camera drama.
The contrast is not merely a technical trick. It shows the difference between the role Allison performs for her husband and the private reality she experiences away from him. The sitcom style turns Kevin’s behavior into a familiar comedy pattern, while the darker mode exposes the resentment, exhaustion, and lack of control beneath that pattern.
The complete two-season run was part of the relevant August 2024 Netflix window. This is the most structurally unusual show in the group and a strong choice for viewers who enjoy television that uses form to criticize the conventions it appears to imitate.

The Bottom Line
The strongest all-purpose starting point is A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder if you want a short, accessible mystery. For a more substantial genre commitment, choose Interview With the Vampire, The Terror Season 1, or all three seasons of A Discovery of Witches.
