Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a 2024 comedy that balances a sharp caper plot with a charismatic lead, start with Hit Man. This is a critic-led ranking based on comic execution, distinctiveness and the appeal of each film as a worthwhile watch—not a universal verdict. Comedy is subjective, and the seven picks range from near-silent slapstick to social satire and superhero gags.
There is no single authoritative ranking: Time Out’s December 16, 2024 year-end list puts Hit Man first, while Metacritic’s separate weighted-review ranking names Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World its Best Comedy of 2024. RogerEbert.com curates a different selection of comedy reviews. The order below is our own, and the films are ranked for different strengths rather than measured on a shared score.
1. Hit Man
This crime caper is the strongest all-around pick here: Glen Powell’s character builds a string of assumed identities, giving the comedy room to shift with each persona while the cop-caper premise keeps the story moving. Time Out’s Global Film Editor Phil de Semlyen writes that a great comedy depends on the alchemy of timing, performances and storytelling as well as the script; Hit Man makes a persuasive case for that mix. It’s a good choice if you want jokes woven into a plot rather than a sequence of disconnected sketches.
Time Out described the film as being on Netflix in its December 2024 article. That is a historical mention, not confirmation of current availability or access in every region.

2. American Fiction
This film blends social farce with family drama, making its satire more than a series of targets and punchlines. Its literary premise and domestic tensions suit viewers who like comedy with an argument—and enough character drama to give the humor emotional weight. The film adapts Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, a natural next read for anyone interested in the story’s source.
3. Hundreds of Beavers
For viewers tired of dialogue-led comedy, this near-silent slapstick film offers a markedly different kind of pleasure: visual gags, physical performance and inventive comic business carry the humor. It is the most formally distinctive pick on this list, and a strong option for anyone who enjoys old-fashioned screen slapstick delivered with an unconventional sensibility.

4. The Holdovers
This bittersweet holiday dramedy pairs a curmudgeonly lead with an unlikely relationship. Its humor is quieter and warmer than the broad farce elsewhere on the list, so it fits viewers who want character-driven comedy with a melancholy edge rather than nonstop laughs.
5. The Fall Guy
A stunt-filled action comedy with a romantic pairing, The Fall Guy puts spectacle alongside its jokes. Choose it if you want movement, stunts and a relationship at the center of the film—not just verbal punchlines. Its comic appeal is tied to the action-comedy mix, rather than satire or tightly constructed farce.

6. Deadpool & Wolverine
This superhero comedy leans on irreverent humor, meta jokes and references to comic-book franchises. It is best suited to viewers who enjoy that self-aware style and recognize the world the film is playing with; if franchise callbacks are not your thing, another pick here may land better.
7. Poor Things
Poor Things is a surreal, provocative fantasia with physical-performance comedy. Its grotesque and adult material makes it the most challenging recommendation here: pick it for an unusual, deliberately unsettling comic tone, not for an easygoing laugh. Viewers differ on where its provocation becomes a barrier, so it is a more divisive choice than the lighter capers and dramedies above.

How this ranking differs from other 2024 comedy lists
These films are not the result of a common scoring system. Time Out’s year-end selection includes a wide range of hybrids, from romantic and horror comedy to musical and dark comedy, and its page duplicates Hundreds of Beavers in two positions. This list selects seven distinct titles and orders them by its own editorial priorities.
Metacritic offers a different, more explicitly review-based method: its January 6, 2025 guide says, “This list only includes films receiving at least 7 reviews from professional critics,” and describes its scores as weighted averages of top professional critics. That eligibility threshold and weighting method explain what its ranking measures; they do not turn a subjective category like comedy into a single definitive answer.
